Twitter announced today that they will be acquiring Scroll and this version of Nuzzel will be shutting down on May 6, 2021. However, Twitter has spun up an internal team of Nuzzel acolytes whose goal is to take the best of the Nuzzel experience and build it directly into Twitter. Nuzzel users who are interested in helping us define what that should look like or get early access to what we build should sign up here. How we got here We acquired Nuzzel in late 2018 when we realized that if we didn't, Nuzzel would shut down. We believed that Jonathan Abrams and team had created something special: a way to make sure you never missed the important story or lost the context of a moment, delivered in a way that emphasized time well spent. We didn't want to see that go away because it was ahead of its time. We were able to move the service on to new managed infrastructure and get it stable. However, as a small team primarily focused on our core service, our work on Nuzzel from then on primarily consisted of quick fixes and duct tape. When Twitter approached us about bringing Scroll into their broader subscription plans, all sides were excited about what we could do with Nuzzel and spent weeks trying to find a way to bring it with us. In the end, we found that the only way for Nuzzel to meet the scalability requirements necessary for a company like Twitter was to rebuild the service from scratch. Where we're going So that's what we've decided to do. Simply cloning a service conceived in 2012 doesn't make a ton of sense. Instead we're going to spend a little time working out how the best of Nuzzel should be expressed in 2021. There may be elements of Nuzzel that also belong in the Twitter app or that can take advantage of new internal APIs. In the meantime, Nuzzel's app, site and email service will go dark. To those of you who love Nuzzel and are disappointed that we can't maintain Nuzzel as-is in the interim, I'm as disappointed as you. We explored any number of Hail Marys to make that happen and just couldn't get there. Looking to the future, Nuzzel's functionality has always felt like it should be a part of Twitter and I'm excited to help make it so. If you want to help, let us know.
