The censors always allege that they're protecting us (from violence, from misinformation and who knows what else/next) and the censors are very rich people or corporations controlled by those very rich people. "Let's bring back the Web to where it was more than 15 years ago (prior to 'surveillance capitalism' and companies such as Facebook and Twitter)."One solution to all this is decentralised Internet; but that's a step too far for many if not most people. So a compromise might be to decentralise the subscription points, not entrusting or outsourcing them to companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. In this video I describe very quickly my (currently) favourite RSS reader. As an early adopter of RSS (also my initials), I've tried a lot such software over the years and currently QuiteRSS seems to be the best of the bunch. It's also Free/libre software, GPLv3-licensed. QuiteRSS QuiteRSS is pre-build for major GNU/Linux distributions. It's available in repositories. Give it a go and use RSS feeds instead of any of those 'social' (control) 'media' platforms. Let's bring back the Web to where it was more than 15 years ago (prior to 'surveillance capitalism' and companies such as Facebook and Twitter). QuiteRSS was first released 9 years ago (relatively new) and it's available for GNU/Linux, MacOS, Windows, FreeBSD, and OS/2. # Share in other sites/networks: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. * Reddit * email Permalink Mail Send this to a friend If you liked this post, consider subscribing to the RSS feed or join us now at the IRC channels. What Else is New 1. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Raspberry Pied in the Face -- Part I: What is Known About the Relationship Between Microsoft and the Raspberry Pi Foundation The backlash against the Raspberry Pi Foundation is growing, not only from customers but also developers and partners; we'll try to explain what happened and why, based on verifiable information rather than hypotheses, face-saving PR, and mindless gossip ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Links 6/2/2021: Debian 10.8 Released, Mageia 8 RC1 Links for the day ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Links 6/2/2021: FOSDEM 2021 Starts Links for the day ----------------------------------------------------------------- 4. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Holding the Raspberry Pi Foundation Accountable by Explaining What Happened (and Providing Evidence) The Raspberry Pi Foundation is under immense pressure at the moment (from partners, not only customers); it refuses to explain what motivated it to sneak Microsoft spyware into millions of devices (same as Intel), with neither notification nor consent ----------------------------------------------------------------- 5. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Turn to RSS Feeds (and Local/Native RSS Readers) to Regain Control of the World Wide Web QuiteRSS (or any other RSS/XML/Atom reader for that matter) helps liberate cyberspace, removing middlemen from one's consumption of information on the Internet; the World Wide Web is otherwise a lost cause, monopolised by companies that censor, spy on, and manipulate people ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Quickly Producing Decent-Quality Videos With Webcamoid and Simple (Low-Cost) Webcams Introducing Webcamoid, previously covered here in passing, as Free/libre software for producing videos on one's desktop or laptop, including screencasting (no need for video editing or post-production hassle) ----------------------------------------------------------------- 7. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter as Thought Police and Speech Police, Blackmailing Twitter Users Twitter is not social and it is not media, either; it's arguably unsocial if not antisocial, actively silencing society to discourage criticism of those who oppress society, even when that criticism is evidence- and fact-based ----------------------------------------------------------------- 8. ----------------------------------------------------------------- IRC Proceedings: Friday, February 05, 2021 IRC logs for Friday, February 05, 2021 ----------------------------------------------------------------- 9. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter Has Just Suspended the President of FFII for Naming Bill Gates Patent Profiteering and Factual Information About Twitter Censorship (Updated) Twitter has just done this to another high-profile user; one must not think or dare talk about compulsory (patent) licensing issues (or Access to Medicine), let alone Twitter censorship on behalf of Bill Gates, apparently... ----------------------------------------------------------------- 10. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A Lot of 'Linux' News is Nowadays Just Spam It's getting difficult to actually find proper, investigative, factual journalism about GNU/Linux as a lot has been reduced to marketing if not pure spam ----------------------------------------------------------------- 11. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Free Software Communities Are Few, But They Still Exist "Communities" that are controlled by corporations (e.g. IBM's Fedora) or something like the Raspberry Pi Foundation (likely with some back room deal signed by Microsoft) aren't worth the trust they claim to be deserving of; it's a simple fact of life that grassroots communities are smaller and are constantly subjected to ridicule and/or subversion attempts ----------------------------------------------------------------- 12. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Why Do Free/Libre Software Organisations Eliminate Community Representatives? Goldman Sachs' and Facebook's? The Linux (kernel) project is hosted by an unethical umbrella organisation that is little but an openwashing and greenwashing PR agency that's exempt from tax and regulations ----------------------------------------------------------------- 16. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Raspberry Pi Foundation Owes Customers an Apology The much-warranted backlash against the Raspberry Pi Foundation seems to have yielded fruit; but for some people it'll be difficult to trust the Raspberry Pi Foundation any longer, though an apology would help ----------------------------------------------------------------- 17. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Open Source Initiative's (OSI) Search for Leadership Might be Its Last Quest for Salvation After almost 23 years the OSI is in a state of crisis and it has no permanent full-time staff; its choice of the sole dedicated worker, which is an ongoing process, might be its last chance to rescue itself and set its sights on the real goals (as opposed to boosting a proprietary monopoly of Microsoft, which is also an attack on software freedom) ----------------------------------------------------------------- 18. ----------------------------------------------------------------- IRC Proceedings: Thursday, February 04, 2021 IRC logs for Thursday, February 04, 2021 ----------------------------------------------------------------- 19. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Le Guern Leaves the EPO After Attacks on Staff's (and Pensioners') Finances Amid Pandemic The EPO's attack on the economic welfare of current and past staff carries on; but it is a very difficult task, both technically and from a "social dynamics" point-of-view ----------------------------------------------------------------- 22. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter: We Suspend Your Account For Quoting the Media About Bill Gates Twitter has once again protected oligarchy from critics, this time banning me while citing completely irrelevant grounds (I did not even criticise vaccination) ----------------------------------------------------------------- 23. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Starting 2021 on a Strong Note After a Tough Month We're starting to become more productive again as a January full of trouble and endless nuisance is behind us; we're still investigating the affairs of the Raspberry Pi Foundation ----------------------------------------------------------------- 24. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Faked Diversity in 'Men-Only Clubs' (and Corporations) Manufacturing a false impression that corporations and organisations are a lot more diverse than they really are will simply prevent them from actually improving diversity; minorities aren't being served by shallow PR tactics like the Linux Foundation's and IBM's ----------------------------------------------------------------- 25. ----------------------------------------------------------------- IRC Proceedings: Wednesday, February 03, 2021 IRC logs for Wednesday, February 03, 2021 ----------------------------------------------------------------- 26. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Links 3/2/2021: LibreOffice 7.1 'Community' Edition, Solus 4.2, and KeePassXC 2.6.4 Links for the day ----------------------------------------------------------------- 27. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Leaked FSFE Diversity Strategy Contains Misogyny Reprinted with permission from the Free Software Fellowship ----------------------------------------------------------------- 28. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Straw Man Arguments That Distract From EPO Scandals The patent boosters and zealots -- or the same firms that prop up the deeply misguided and harmful UPCA -- are happy to float narratives of EPO managers who oppress their staff and do a disservice to stakeholders (actual scientists, not mass litigation profiteers) ----------------------------------------------------------------- 29. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Bubble of Outsourced Services Should Be Called Bubble Computing, Not Clown (or 'Cloud') Computing The bubble of 'clown computing' (what we've chosen to call "the cloud") is like many other bubbles, including old mainframes on which people paid "rents" and bought "computer time"; it's a massive regression and it's rarely profitable ----------------------------------------------------------------- 30. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Raspberry Pi Foundation is Trying to Cover Up Its Deal With the Devil by Censoring Its Own Customers Our findings about Eben Upton's company turn out to be true and the reality is even worse than we initially thought ----------------------------------------------------------------- * Post Author + Dr. Roy Schestowitz Dr. Roy Schestowitz Contact us (encrypted/PGP) Homepage Identica Twitter Reddit Digg Diaspora YouTube LinkedIn * Supporting the Efforts + Support Techrights Techrights button + Spread TechBytes TechBytes * Pages + About the Editors + About the Site + Billwatch Resurrected o Billwatch Articles Database o Billwatch Quotes Database o Billwatch Snippets Database - Part I o Billwatch Snippets Database - Part II o Billwatch Snippets Database - Part III o Billwatch Snippets Database - Part IV + Comes vs. Microsoft + Companies to Avoid + Donate + Frequently-Asked Questions o Foire aux Questions (French) + Get the Facts: Microsoft/Novell Deal + How to Use This Web Site + Introduction to Patents (in Videos) + IRC Channels o IRC Archives + Making the Move to GNU/Linux + Microsoft Critique: Resources + ODF Resources + OOXML Abuse Index + Pages Archive + Patent TrollTracker Resurrected + Related Sites + Samba Resources + Search + Site Archives (Download) + Site Wiki + The Free Software Credibility Index + Twitter and Identi.ca + Why Boycott? * Search Techrights [ ] [Search] [ ] [Google >] Google search produces more relevant results, whereas normal search places recent ones first.
