κρατήσωμε μυστικό το θάνατό του ως που να τελειώσω εγώ τη

παρουσιαστώ στον πατέρα σου και να προσπαθήσω με σεβασμό και με
χίλια παρακάλια να τον πείσω να μην αρνηθή.

Όχι, Κλεάνθη, μη μιλής πλέον γι' αυτό· ας αφήσωμε κάθε σκέψι
γάμου. Ύστερα από τη στέρησι του πατέρα μου δε θέλω να μπω πλέον
στον κόσμο, ποτέ πλέον. Ναι, πατέρα μου, αν αντέτεινα πριν στη
θέλησί σου, θακολουθήσω τουλάχιστον μια από τις επιθυμίες σου
για να επανορθώσω τη λύπη που έννοιωσες εξ αιτίας μου

είναι δύσκολο πράγμα. Είμαι πρόθυμος να κάνω ό,τι δήποτε για ν'
αποκτήσω την ωραία Αγγελική.

Ξαίρεις τι σκέφτηκα, αδελφέ μου; Να γίνης εσύ γιατρός. Θα σου
είναι πολύ πειο κόμοδο, γιατί θάχης μέσα σου ό,τι σου

Αλλά πρέπει να ξαίρω να μιλώ καλά τα λατινικά, να γνωρίζω τις
αρρώστειες και τα φάρμακα για την καθεμιά.

φαντασιοπληξίες του. Άλλως τε, αυτό γίνεται μεταξύ μας. Μπορούμε
και 'μείς να πάρωμε από ένα ρόλον ο καθένας μας και να
κωμικοποιηθούμε σε στενό κύκλο. Το καρναβάλι το επιτρέπει. Πάμε
γρήγορα να ετοιμάσωμεν την διάσκέδασιν.

Κατόπιν εισέρχεται όλος ο όμιλος, ο οποίος απαρτίζεται από οκτώ πρόσωπα κρατούντα κλυστήρια, έξ φαρμακοποιούς, είκοσι δύο διδάκτορας, μεταξύ των οποίων συγκαταλέγεται και εκείνος που αναγορεύεται γιατρός, από οκτώ χορεύοντας και δύο τραγουδούντας χειρουργούς. Όλοι καταλαμβάνουν τας θέσεις των, έκαστος κατά την τάξιν εις την οποίαν ανήκει).

Δεν ημπορώ, σοφοί συνάδελφοι, να παραστήσω ακριβώς τι επινόησις καλή είναι το γιατρικό επάγγελμα· πόσο καλή και ευεργετική είν' η ευλογημένη γιατρική Μόνο με τ' όνομά της, με τα εξαίσια θαύματά της, από την πιο παληά εποχή δίνει σε τόσους τη ζωή.
Όπου γης κι' αν ήμαστε εξακουστοί γινόμαστε· όλοι, μεγάλοι και μικροί σε μας τρέχουν σαν τρελλοί. Στα γιατρικά μας καταφεύγουν και σαν θεούς μας θεωρούν, πρίγκηπες και μεγιστάνες τας συνταγάς μας εκτελούν.
Σύνεσις και λογικόν μας επιβάλλουνε λοιπόν να εργαζώμεθα πολύ για να διατηρήσουμε καλή πίστι, φήμη και τιμή. Προσοχή να μη δεχώμαστε στο σώμα των σοφών γιατρών· παρά ανθρώπους ικανούς για το 'ψηλό επάγγελμα.
Γι' αυτό σας εκαλέσαμε· ο άνθρωπος που βλέπετε έχει προσόντα για γιατρός και είναι ικανώτατος. Τους αρρώστους ερωτά κ' εξετάζει κατά βάθος για κάθε πάθος χωριστά, χωρίς να πέφτη και σε λάθος.
