Päätös.
Hedwig ja Kilian von Diesbach solmisivat avioliittoa keskenänsä ja samaten Magdalena ja Herman Nagöli.
Toimitus suoritettiin Stans'in kirkossa.
Scharnachthal, Bubenberg, Renato herttua ja Hallwyl olivat siinä saapuvilla.
Vähän matkaa sieltä, järven rannalla, Waldstättien liittokunta oli ko'ossa. Riideltiin, meluttiin, raivottiin.
Eräs mies ilmestyi, erakko, pyhimys, Nikolaus von der Flüe, sama, jonka muistoa Sveitsi vielä nytkin pitää kunniassa.
Hän saarnasi sovintoa, yksimielisyyttä, ja hänen kansalaisensa saivat sinä päivänä ihanimman voittonsa, voiton omista himoistansa.
Sitten erakko kääntyi niiden puoleen, jotka tulivat ulos kirkosta, ja sanoi heille ennustaen:
— "Ottakaa vaari! minä tiedän, että useat meistä aikovat mennä Ranskan kuninkaan luo, joka tahtoo meitä palkkoihinsa; minä tiedän myös, että löytyy toisia, jotka menevät Lothringin herttuan palvelukseen. Hänen asiansa on oikea; kuningas Ludovik on suuri kuningas, mutta ottakaa vaari, veljeni … niinkauan kuin vielä taistelitte kotomaan kamaralla itsenäisyytenne puolesta, Jumala antoi teille voitollisia sekä jaloja päiviä, yhtäläisiä kuin tämäkin päivä. Toisin on käyvä, jos luovutte isienne karkeasta yksinkertaisuudesta, jos muututte kunnianhimoisiksi miehiksi, palkkasotureiksi. Ottakaa aioissa vaari!"
Ja siunattuaan kaikkia pyhä erakko palasi vuorille takaisin.
Historiasta tiedetään, kuinka tämä ennustus toteentui.

Tällä välin oli Kilian kirkon portailla sulkenut Hedwigin syliinsä ja painanut hänen otsalleen jäähyväis-suudelman.
Hän lähti Ranskaan muiden päällikköjen kanssa; Herman Nagöli häntä seurasi.
Se, mikä äsken oli tapahtunut, oli ainoastaan kihlajaiset.
Nuo molemmat nuoret miehet olivat jo katoomaisillaan erään niemen ta'a. Vielä kerran he katsahtivat taakseen rannalle, jossa nuo nuoret naiset seisoivat, ja vaihettivat näiden kanssa viimeisen silmäyksen, viimeisen merkin, jolla tahtoivat sanoa: Jumalan haltuun.
Samassa vene lähti rannasta.
Veneessä Villon ja Renato herttua.
— "Voi!" Renato herttua huokasi "en koskaan voi unohtaa rakkauttani, mutta voin sen voittaa. Sinä et saata ymmärtää, Villon, kuinka minä olen kärsinyt ja kuinka vieläkin saan kärsiä. Se on tuommoinen muisto, jota ei koskaan saa sydämmestä poistetuksi vaan se kestää kuolemaan asti."
Runoilija ei vastannut; hän kohotti vaan silmänsä taivasta kohti.
Ei pilvenhattaraakaan missään; taivas siintävä, siintävä järvenpinta. Aurinko levitti kirkkaita säteitään tuntureille, jotka olivat juuriltaan vaskenkarvaisia, rinteiltään vihannoita ja kukoistavia sekä huipuiltaan hohtavan valkoisia.
Ilma oli mieto ja tuoksuja täynnä, ikäänkuin taivaallinen sopusointu olisi vallinnut siinä.
Kauan aikaa vielä nuoren herttuan silmät tarkastivat sitä paikkaa rannalla, johon kenties ikipäiviksi Hedwig oli kadonnut hänen silmistänsä.

Kuukautta myöhemmin Renato Lothringilainen palasi herttuakuntaansa.
Koko väestö riensi häntä vastaan ja tervehti häntä pelastajanansa.
Ainoastaan muutamat kaupungit vielä pitivät Burgundin herttuan puolta. Hän valloitti ne väkirynnäköllä. Sitten alkoi hän piirittää Nancy'ä, joka hänelle hyvinkin pian aukaisi porttinsa.
Jolanda herttuatar sekä Johanna d'Harcourt saapuivat sinne pari päivää jälkeenpäin.
— "Serkkuni", Renato sanoi, "sydämmeni salaisen haavan tunnette; mutta minä tahdon sen parantaa nyt. Auttakaa minua… Se on puolison käsi, jonka teille tarjoon."
Kokonaan hämmästyksen ja mielenliikutuksen vallassa, Johanna juoksi kätkemään punastuvat kasvonsa herttuattaren helmaan.
— "Jumalan tähden", nuori herttua huudahti, "äitini, kuinka olette vaalea!"
— "Ei se mitään ole", tämä sanoi, "ilo … minun sydämmeni ei siihen ole enää tottunut. Jonkun aikaa on minulla ollut tuommoisia hermo-väristyksiä, joiden sanotaan olevan kuolemaksi… No, vaan ei … älä ole mureissasi; minä elän nähdäkseni sinut onnellisena… Minäkin olen onnellinen!"
Hän koitti hymyillä.
François Villon oli ainoa, joka ei antanut pettää itseänsä. Hän mietti mielessään:
— "Herttuattarella on kuolema sydämmessään."

Jonkun aikaa jälkeenpäin runoilija saapui Plessy-les-Tours'in linnaan.
— "Totta Jumaliste! toverini, enpä luullut sinua enää olevan koko mailmassa. Miksi, hiisi vieköön, sinut juuri nyt saan nähdä?"
— "Sire, minä tulen pyytämään apua Teidän Majesteetiltanne."
— "Itsellesi?"
— "Lothringin herttualle."
— "Ahaa! vai niin, kyllä ymmärrän. Burgundin leijona on lähtenyt luolastaan ja näyttää vielä kerran hampaitansa. Koko maailma toivoo rauhaa, hän yksinään sotaa … ja se on oleva hänen turmionsa. Hänen omat alamaisensakin tarvitsevat lepoa; Kaarlo Rohkean on aika jo kadota… Ja hänen täytyy kadota … minä en sitä enää vastusta… Sinä saat sen sanoa noille neljälle toverille, joiden kättä jo liian kauan olen pidättänyt… Minä sanoin sen itse aivan äskettäin Campobasso'lle."
Runoilija kumarsi sanaakaan vastaamatta.
— "Mutta mikä sinua oikeastaan vaivaa?" kuningas kysyi, "olethan kovin surkea näöltäsi."
— "Sire, se tulee siitä, kun muistan Renato herttuaa. Hänen on täytynyt lähteä Nancy'stä, jätettyänsä kaiken sotaväen, mitä hänellä oli, hyvien Lothringilaistensa puolustukseksi, luvattuansa hankkia heille apua kahden kuukauden kuluessa ja velvoitettuansa heitä puolustamaan kaupunkia siihen saakka. Sitten hän meni pyytämään apua Sveitsiläisiltä."
— "Sveitsiläisiltä", Ludovik XI huudahti, "haa, enpä olekkaan erehtynyt, ne ovat uljasta väkeä. Heidän päällikkönsä ovat olleet minua tervehtimässä… Bubenberg, Scharnachthal, Hallwyl ja Kilian von Diesbach. Minä annoin heidän kertoa kokonaisuudessaan nuo molemmat kuuluisat tappelut… Heidän suoruutensa minua suuresti miellytti … me tuhlasimme heille runsain määrin sekä rahoja että kohteliaisuuden-osoituksia. He rakastavat rahaa, ja pitääpä heidän sitä saaman, totta Jumaliste! kun vaan auttavat minun hyvää serkkuani… Siinä on kaikki, mitä voin tehdä hänen hyväksensä. Mutta sinä itse, Villon, etkö sinä mitään pyydä?"
— "En, sire", runoilija vastasi, "minun tehtäväni on päättynyt."
— "Minun alkaa'" sanoi kuningas.
Ja kun hän sitten kätensä käyristi sekä tähysti silmillään taivaanrantaa, näytti aivan siltä, kuin olisi hän tahtonut kiskoa puoleensa koko Burgundin, Provence'n, Artois'in ja kaikki maat, joista jälkeenpäin nykyinen Ranskanmaa on muodostunut.
Villon lähti jo seuraavana päivänä, varustettuna avunsitoumuksilla
Renato herttuaa varten, ja itse puolestaan täydellä kukkarolla.
— "Tyhmä se, joka ei ota vastaan tarjottaissa", Ludovik XI oli sanonut, laskiessaan hänet luotansa; "oletko hullu?… Totta Jumaliste! eikö raha kelpaa!"
Jonkun aikaa oli Renato herttua jo kulkenut Sveitsissä yllyttäen, kiihoittaen mieliä, vaan turhaan. Sveitsiläiset muistivat erakon sanoja. Heitä vähän epäilytti, ennenkuin aloittivat tuon surkean palkkasoturi-historiansa. Ja toiseksi, mitähän maksettaisiin? Se on niiltä aioin kuin tuo sananparsi on syntyänsä: "ei rahaa, eikä Sveitsiläisiä!" Villon vihdoin ilmestyi, julistaen, että oli saatavana neljä florinia kuukaudessa ja lisäksi vielä melkoinen vuosiraha kullekin päällikölle sekä suuri summa joka maakunnalle. Enempää ei tarvittu. Heti saatiin kymmenen-tuhatta miestä. Ja vieläpä liputkin.
Renato herttua sitä vastoin pestasi väkeä Elsass'issa. Hän lähti sitten yhdistymään Sveitsiläisten kanssa, puettuna samoin kuin nämäkin Saksalais-pukuun ja pertuska olkapäällä.
Kiiruimman kautta marsittiin Lothringiin. Ja kiirettäpä tulikin pitää. Nancy'ssä oli hätä korkeimmillansa. Kolmatta kuukautta oli Burgundin herttua sitä jo piirittänyt kaiken sotaväen kanssa, minkä oli saanut kokoon haalituksi.
Se oli hänen kolmas armeijansa. Burgundilaisia ja Flamandilaisia vähäisen, paitsi joku aatelismies, joka oli päättänyt kuolla herransa kanssa. Paljo Englantilaisia, Stadelaisia sekä Italialaisia, joita johti Campobasso, tuo suosikas, joka jälleen oli päässyt armoihin, tuo kirottu sielu kaikissa Burgundin herttuan toimissa.
Hänen ympärillään vallitsi alakuloisuus, nurjamielisyys, petollisuus ja kaikki muu kehnous, mitä suinkin saattaa ajatella. Talvi oli hirveän kylmä. Joulu-yönä yksinään paleltui neljä sataa miestä; moni menetti jalkansa ja kätensä. Hevoset kuolivat; ihmiset olivat sairaina ja näöltään kuin varjot. Mutta kaupungissa oli hätä vieläkin suurempi. Herttua tuon tiesi; siitä hänen yksipäisyytensä. Hänen oma ruumiinsa oli kuin rautaa ja muiden tuskista hän viis välitti; hän sanoi vaan: "minä en täältä lähde ennenkun olen kukistanut Lothringin, että voin karata uudestaan Ranskan kimppuun." Ja kaikista neuvoista huolimatta, hän ei vaan tahtonut väistyä tuommoisen tieltä, jota hän kutsui lapseksi; hänkö heittäisi piirityksensä… Ei koskaan! Oli niin sallittu, että hänelle piirityksistä aina seurasi onnettomuutta.
Tähän aikaan Renato herttua sai joka päivä jonkun uuden tarjouksen Campobasso'lta. "Luvatkaa minulle kreivikunta Vaudemont. Antakaa minulle ainakin Commercy, joka minulla oli ennen sotaa." Eräänä päivänä Burgundin herttua oli joutunut vihan vimmaan ja löi häntä vasten silmiä. Italialainen ei enää vaatinut mitään. Kosto oli hänelle nyt tarpeeksi.
Samana iltana, jona Sveitsiläiset vihdoinkin tulivat, — 4 p.
Tammikuuta 1477 — tappelupäivän aattona, hän meni vihollisen puolelle.
Sveitsiläiset eivät hänestä huolineet; he eivät tahtoneet taistella tuommoisen petturin rinnalla.
Hän käänsi hevosensa ja poistui niiden muutamien ritarien kanssa, jotka häntä ympäröivät.
— "Sama se! minä tiedän kyllä, mitä tietä herttua pakenee, minä tiedän, missä voin antaa hänelle kuoliniskun."
Neljä miestä, neljä salaista henkilöä astui samassa esiin pimeästä.
Nesle, Gent, Dinant ja Lüttich, nuo neljä kostajaa.
— "Malttakaa, toveri, me tulemme kanssanne!"
He seurasivat nyt häntä … ja Villon myöskin.
Hän tahtoi olla muassa; hän tahtoi nähdä.
Ja tosiaankin, Kaarlo Rohkean tappio näytti varmalta.
Murten'in tappelun jälkeen oli hän enää ainoastaan varjo entisestänsä: kalpea, laiha, kamalan-näköinen, parta siivoton, tukka pörrössä, ja aivan kuin mieletön, milloin raivokkaan hulluuden, milloin synkkämielisen hermottomuuden vallassa. Ei kukaan tohtinut häntä enää lähestyä, paitsi hänen narri parkansa, Glorieux, joka, vaikka lakkaamatta sai vastaan-ottaa sekä ärjymistä että lyöntejä, kuitenkin yhä jälleen tuli takaisin, niinkuin uskollinen koira. Tuo oli ainoa ystävä, joka hänellä enää oli jäljellä, joka valvoi yöt päivät hänen vuoteensa vieressä, lohdutti häntä ja vieläpä väliin koetti saada häntä hymyilemäänkin.
Maa lepäsi lumen peitossa. Luminen oli itse ilmakin. Jäinen kylmyys, synkkä taivas, kamala aika.
Edellisenä yönä oli kaupunkia vastaan taas turhaan rynnistetty. Seuraavana aamuna päivän koitossa annettiin käsky marssia Sveitsiläisiä vastaan. Oli aikomus näiltä sulkea tie.
Sotaväki nurisi. Muutamat päälliköt uskalsivat vielä viimeisen kerran kehoittaa perääntymiseen.
— "Menkää, jos mieli tekee!" herttua ärjäsi. "Vaikkapa jäisin aivan yksinäni, taistelen kuitenkin!"
Koko hänen Burgundilainen ja Flamandilainen ritaristonsa päästi uljaan sotahuudon vastaukseksi ja asettui järjestykseen hänen taaksensa.
Hänellä itsellään ei kuitenkaan ollut paljo toivoa. Kun hän pani kypärin päähänsä, irtaantui sulkatöyhtö ja putosi maahan. "Hoc est signum Dei" (tämä on merkki taivaasta) hän arveli itsekseen ja nousi suuren, mustan sota-oriinsa selkään.
Jalkaväki pakeni jo ensi kahakassa. Ritarit sitä vastoin panivat uljaasti henkensä alttiiksi. Mutta lumi oli iljakasta ja hevoset menivät nurin. Tappelu muuttui pian paljaaksi teurastamiseksi. Kaarlo Rohkea yksinään teki vastarintaa, näöltään vielä nytkin ylevän urheana, etsiessään itselleen arvokasta kuolemaa.
Mutta pakenevien tungossa hänenkin täytyi kääntää hevosensa ja paeta muutamien ritarien seurassa.
Yksi ainoa pakotie oli mahdollinen: tie Vouxieres'in sillan yli.
Sinne oli Campobasso asettunut väijyksiin ja hänen kanssaan noiden neljän hävitetyn kaupungin kostajat, nuo neljä hahmotoveria.
Miekka paljastettuna, väijyvin silmin ja kasvot vihan vääristäminä, he vartosivat.
Synkän hämärän läpi, jota ainoastaan lumihahtuvat valaisivat, huomattiin vihdoin useiden ratsumiesten lähenevän täyttä nelistä.
Etupäässä Burgundin herttua.
Gent kiirehti ensimäisenä häntä vastaan ja sivalsi hänen hevostansa, joka hypähti pystyyn sekä hirnui tuskissansa.
Ritarit riensivät herransa avuksi. Seurasi hetkinen sekasortoa, jonka aikana, keskellä hevosten poljentaa ja aseiden kalsketta, herttua sai ensimäisen haavan.
Ja miehen ääni, jonka hän hyvin tunsi, huudahti:
— "Muista Nesle'ä!"
Vähän jälkeen päin, kun jo viimeisetkin hänen puolustajistaan kaatuivat, hän sai keihään kylkeensä. Ja nyt kuuli hän taasen huudon:
— "Dinant! muista Dinant'ia!"
— "Lüttich! muista Lüttich'iä!" kiljasi neljäs ja katkasi hänen kätensä nuijan-iskulla.
Ensimäinen tuli takaisin kantaen kädessään raskasta miekkaansa. Hän halkaisi herttuan pään huudahtaen:
— "Gent!"
Herttua kaatui ja kieri jäätyneen lammikon rannalle. Campobasso lähestyi häntä:
— "Sinä olet lyönyt minua vasten silmiä! nyt on minun vuoroni, onpa niinkin!"
Ja hän kohotti herttuan verisen pään yli rautaan puetun kantapäänsä.
Mutta Villon kiirehti paikalle ja sanoi:
— "Malttakaa! ei ole tapana lyödä vihollista, joka jo makaa maassa!
Minä kiellän teitä Ranskanmaan nimessä!"
Samana iltana Campobasso näki herttuan narrin tulevan hänen puheillensa.

— "Teidän Ylhäisyytenne, minulla ei enää ole isäntää, ettekö tahtoisi ottaa minua luoksenne?"
Campobasso suostui.
Seuraavana päivänä makasi hän kuolleena, puukko rinnassa.
Glorieux oli kadonnut.

Pari päivää jälkeenpäin Renato herttua vietti häitään Johannan kanssa pääkaupungissansa, joka silloin oli kokonaan juhlapuvussa.
Jolanda herttuatar oli kovin kalpea ja näytti riutuneelta. Usein painoi hän kätensä sydäntä vasten. Kun lähdettiin kirkkoon, tunsi hän olevansa ylen heikko voidakseen seurata lapsiansa. Sieltä palattua sulki hän molemmat samaan syleilykseen ja sanoi heille hymyten:
— "Jumala on kuullut rukoukseni. Oi! minä olen onnellinen!"
François Villon seisoi muutaman askeleen päässä väkijoukon keskellä. Jolanda käänsi päänsä häntä kohden ja osoitti silmillään taivaasen päin.
Sitten kohtasi häntä äkillinen väristys, hän kaatui taaksepäin eikä sen ko'ommin enää liikahtanut.
Näin heitti hän henkensä.
Runoilija oli ainoa, joka ei saanut näyttää kyyneleitänsä. Hän lähti pois hiljaa huoaten:
— "Jalo nainen! minä olen ymmärtänyt sinun viimeisen toivosi, tuon silmäyksen, jonka minuun heitit … niin! olenpa osoittava, että sen ansaitsin!"

— "Martti ystäväni", Villon sanoi Troussecaille'lle, "olen kuullut sinun usein uneksivan pientä mökkiä jollakin Pariisin viinimäellä vähäisen vuositulon kanssa, niin että voisit elää kunniallisena miehenä. Tässä, katsoppas … ota tämä kukkaro … ja ole onnellinen."
— "Entä sinä?"
— "Minä lähden."
— "Siinä tapauksessa en huoli! pidä itse rahasi."
— "Ota pois vaan, niinhän kuningaskin sanoi. Äläkä ole milläsikään, ystäväni. Kyllä me vielä toisemme tapaamme. Eletään hyvässä toivossa! Kyllähän kerran yhteen yhdymme!"
Turhaan Troussecaille vartosi.
François Villon ei tullut koskaan takaisin.
Kymmenen vuotta jälkeenpäin, kun Kaarlo VIII teki retkensä Italiaan, kulki Renato Lothringin herttua joukkoineen St. Bernhard'in yli ja Fridolin seurasi häntä aseenkantajana. Molemmat huomasivat silloin luostarissa erään munkin, joka vältti heidän silmäyksiänsä ja oli vallan ihmeellisesti runoilijan näköinen.
He alkoivat tiedustella. Se oli jumalisin ja kunnioitettavin mies koko luostarissa. He päättivät häntä puhutella.
— "Sinäkö se olet, François Villon? … täällä? … kuinka? … miksi?…"
St. Bernhard'in munkki vastasi lyhyesti:
— "Minä toivon … ansaitsen … ja vartoon!"
