New Features in Version 1.1 =========================== o Client authentication by MAC address: can be set up on the access point or on a RADIUS server o Access point privacy mode: broadcasting of WLAN service area (ESSID) can be disabled o Client privacy protection: client-to-client blocking prevents clients associated with the same access point from communicating o Load balancing: maximum number of associated clients can be specified (from 1-256) o Client list timeout: length of time a client remains in the list of associated clients after ending the association can be specified Upgrading to Version 1.1 ======================== The Access Point 8000 version 1.1 upgrade package contains separate operational code and file system files that are needed to upgrade from previous releases. Starting with version 1.1, Access Point 8000 firmware (also called agent software) consists of one file, which contains both the operational code and the web server file system, instead of the separate files used in previous releases. Note: Because of this change, you cannot revert to a previous release after upgrading to version 1.1. The version 1.1 upgrade package on the 3Com Web site contains these files: OP011001.bin: separate operational code FS011001.bin: separate file system FW011001.bin: combined operational code and file system Overview of Upgrade Procedures ------------------------------ To perform an upgrade, you must have a TFTP server set up. Depending on the firmware version you are currently running, you can use the following tools to discover devices: o 3Com Wireless Infrastructure Device Manager--You must use this tool to upgrade from version 1.0. You can use it to upgrade individual devices from version 1.01. o 3Com Network Supervisor (3NS)--You can use this tool to upgrade from version 1.01. 3NS allows you to upgrade multiple access point in one operation. You cannot use 3NS to upgrade from version 1.0. Finding the Current Firmware Version ------------------------------------ To find the firmware version that is currently installed on an access point, launch the 3Com Wireless Infrastructure Device Manager, select the access point, and click Configure. In the configuration menu, click System Summary. The firmware version is listed in the summary page. Upgrading from Version 1.0 -------------------------- Download the upgrade package from the 3Com Web site and copy it to a location on your TFTP server. Then follow this procedure for each access point that is running firmware version 1.0: 1. Use the 3Com Wireless Infrastructure Device Manager to select the access point and launch its configuration. 2. Use the Upgrade System page to perform the upgrade. Be sure to upgrade the operational code and the file system at the same time. (Check both the Access Point Firmware and the Configuration Management System check boxes.) Upgrading from Version 1.01 --------------------------- If you are upgrading from version 1.01, you can either: o Use 3Com Wireless Infrastructure Device Manager to discover the access points and then upgrade them individually. o Use 3NS to discover the access points and upgrade multiple units in one operation. The multiple unit upgrade procedure is detailed in the following section. Using 3Com Network Supervisor to Upgrade Multiple Access Point 8000 Units ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Use the following procedure for upgrading multiple Access Point 8000 units from Access Point 8000 agent software version 1.01 to version 1.1. (If you are upgrading from version 1.0, use the procedure in “Upgrading from Version 1.0”.) This procedure requires 3NS version 3.5 with service pack 3 or later installed. You can install 3NS from the 3Com CD and download service packs from the 3Com Web site. 1. Download the version 1.1 agent package from the 3Com Web site to a location on your computer. 2. Start 3NS and open (or discover) a map that contains all the access points that you want to upgrade. 3. Upgrade the operational code on multiple access points as follows: a. Select an Access Point 8000 in the 3NS map. b. Right click and select Agent Update from the menu; in the Introduction window, click Next. c. In the Update Type window, select Custom and click Next. d. In the Specify Devices and Agent Versions window, select 3Com Access Point 8000 and click Change Version. e. In the Change Version window, click Have Disk. f. Browse to the location of the agents and double click the operational code agent (OP011001). g. In the Change Version window, click Have Disk. h. Double click the file system agent (FS011001), then, in the Change Version window, click OK. i. In the Specify Devices and Agent Versions window, click Back. j. In the Update Type window: - select Update all devices of the following type - select 3Com Access Point 8000 from the pull-down menu - click Next k. Click Finish. The operational code on all out-of-date Access Point 8000 units in the map is updated. 4. Upgrade the file system software on multiple access points as follows: a. Right click and select Agent Update from the menu; in the Introduction window, click Next. b. In the Update Type window, select Custom and click Next. c. In the Specify Devices and Agents window, click Add. d. In the Find Device window, select Search by Device Type. e. Select 3Com Access Point 8000 and click Find. f. Select all the found devices and click OK. g. In the Specify Devices and Agent Versions window, select any devices currently running version 1.1 and click Remove. (This step is optional, but speeds the update.) h. Click Next. i. Click Finish. The file system software on the selected devices is updated.
