This text is contained in a file called !license.txt if downloaded from the 3Com Bulletin Board. Your legal rights are defined therein. USE OF THIS SOFTWARE INDICATES THAT YOU ACCEPT SUCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH SUCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS, DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE. =============================================================================== 2: New Features in This Release =============================================================================== Version 2.31 of the management software provides no extra functionality for switches in the 1100/3300 and 610/630 family. It fixes a problem as described in section 3 below. The version 2.31 agent feature set is a compatible superset of that provided by the previous version 2.30 agent. When you upgrade from a previous version of management software, all configuration data is retained. =============================================================================== 3: Version 2.31 Fixes for known Software Bugs =============================================================================== Version 2.31 of the management software provides fixes for certain software bugs found in earlier versions of the switch software agent. Version 2.31 fixes the following known problem: 1. Occasional and partial loss of configuration data. =============================================================================== 4: Recommendations When Using This Release =============================================================================== - It is strongly recommended that all units in a stack should be running the same version of agent software. - If you install a SuperStack II Switch 1000BASE-SX/LX Module and connect the Module port to another 1000BASE-SX/LX device, we recommend that both ends of the link are configured to use the same IEEE 802.3z auto-negotiation setting. - The Port Setup page of the web interface contains an Auto-negotiation listbox that allows you to enable and disable auto-negotiation for twisted pair ports. If you set the Auto-negotiation listbox to Enabled and click Apply, the true speed and duplex settings may not be shown immediately on the Port Setup page. We recommend that you click the relevant port icon on the Switch Graphic to refresh the page and show the true settings. - If you have a CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 switch on your network, we recommend that the CoreBuilder 3500 has management software version 2.0x or later installed. - If differing community strings are configured for units in a stack the result will be to slow down management response (e.g. the CLI will appear to run very slowly). The solution is to ensure all units are configured with matching community strings. - If an existing stack with STAP enabled is powered-up with a new unit that has STAP disabled, the setting of the new unit may override the whole stack. A similar issue may also be encountered with the broadcast storm control setting. When powering up an existing stack with new units in this way, the recommended procedure is to either (i) configure the new unit appropriately before adding it to the stack, or (ii) re-configure the new stack appropriately immediately after power-up. - Immediately after creating a new VLAN, the VLAN based counters will only count for ports local to the unit where the VLAN was created. In order for ports in other units to contribute to the VLAN counters a reset of the stack is required. - Hardware version 2 of switch 3300 and 3300 XM units will only operate correctly with management software version 2.01 or later. If you require an earlier version of management software, please contact your local 3Com technical support organization. For more information, refer to Appendix D of the SuperStack II Switch 3300 User Guide. - When a 1000BASE-LX module is installed in a switch 3300 FX it is displayed incorrectly by the Web manager as a 1000BASE-SX module. The module will however operate correctly. =============================================================================== 5: Known Problems With This Release =============================================================================== Version 2.31 is distributed with the following known problems: - If you install a SuperStack II Switch 1000BASE-SX/LX Module into your Switch, ensure that the optical connection to the Module port conforms to IEEE 802.3z. If the signal levels are outside the IEEE 802.3z standard, the Switch may not operate correctly. - (Switch 1100 only) The 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX ports on your Switch cannot auto-negotiate IEEE 802.3x flow control. If you want to enable IEEE 802.3x flow control on a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX port: 1. From the Port Setup page of the web interface, set the Auto-negotiation listbox to Disabled. 2. Click Apply. 3. Set the FD Flow Control listbox to Enabled. 4. Configure the port to the desired speed and full duplex operation. 5. Click Apply. - Packets that have an 802.1Q tag can have a legal length of up to 1522 bytes. RMON categorizes packets over 1518 bytes as oversize packets, which means that some 802.1Q-tagged packets may be recorded as oversize. - Roving analysis generates up to two copies of each flooded packet. To avoid this duplication, remove the analysis port from all the VLANs to which the monitor port belongs. If you do this, the analysis port generates all VLAN-tagged packets as untagged packets. - If you are using a SuperStack II Switch 1000BASE-SX/LX Module and you configure Link Up traps for the Module port, some of the traps may not be generated. To ensure that Link Up traps always reach your management workstation, configure the traps on both ends of the link. - IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Learning (GVRP) only functions correctly in networks that have 16 or less 802.1Q VLANs. - After BOOTP is enabled the unit needs to be power cycled before BOOTP starts operating. - When commands in the 'Bridge/MulticastFiltering/RouterPort' CLI menu are used the box may very occasionally reset. - If the ATM expansion module is configured with the same IP address as the switch stack, the whole stack may become unmanageable. =============================================================================== 6: Documentation Errors and Omissions =============================================================================== The documentation for the Switch family does not include following new CLI commands added in version 2.30 to support configuration of the ATM expansion module: 'system/module/define' - module IP configuration 'system/module/display' - display module IP configuration 'system/module/mode' - enable or disable the module =============================================================================== 7: Network Management Software Support =============================================================================== Complete support for Version 2.31 of the Management Software is only supplied by the following applications: - Transcend TCNS version 5.0 for UNIX - Transcend TCNS version 5.1 for UNIX - Transcend TCNS version 5.1 for Windows NT - Transcend Enterprise Manager version 6.2 for Windows - Transcend WorkGroup Manager version 6.2 for Windows The software patch P0144 can be used to provide partial support for the Version 2.31 Management Software on the following applications: - Transcend Enterprise Manager 97 for NT - Transcend Enterprise Manager for Windows (Version 6.1 or later) - Transcend WorkGroup Manager for Windows (Version 6.1 or later) Note that P0144 is stored in the Transcend directory of the SuperStack II Switch Family CD-ROM. =============================================================================== 8: Upgrading to This Release =============================================================================== The management software can be upgraded by using a TFTP Server or by using the Management Software Upgrade Utility supplied with your Switch. - If you have downloaded the management software designed for a TFTP Server upgrade, place the file s2s02_31.bin in the appropriate directory on the Server. Note: 3Com provides a DOS-based TFTP Server on the 3Com Bulletin Board. For information on how to use the Server, refer to the file 3comtftp.txt that is supplied with it. - If you have downloaded the management software designed for a serial upgrade using the Management Software Upgrade Utility, place the file s2s02_31.bin in a directory accessible by the PC running the utility. For more information, refer to the Management Guide supplied with your Switch. =============================================================================== 9: World Wide Web Site =============================================================================== Access the latest networking information on the 3Com Corporation World Wide Web site by entering our URL into your Internet browser: http://www.3com.com/ _______________________________________________________________________________ (R) means registered trademark.
