Google is looking to partner with businesses, education institutions, and non-profits to [44]help test its 20 Gig symmetrical internet service. TechSpot reports: Nick Saporito, head of multi-gig & commercial product at Google, said they are only looking for eight additional partners so space is incredibly limited. Ideal candidates include those that are already downloading and uploading massive data sets, those conducting research that commands loads of bandwidth, or perhaps organizations working on future-focused tech that Google hasn't even yet considered but needs lots of throughput. If selected for the test, Google will reach out to your organization to discuss the next steps. Google has been testing the 20 Gig service since at least late last year. We know this because Saporito shared [45]a screenshot of a speed test conducted at his house in Kansas City highlighting his connection's throughput. Speaking to his home connection, Saporito said he tried to test its limits by streaming as many World Cup games in 4K as he had devices but didn't even come close to saturating the connection. apply tags__________ 170969719 story [46]Power [47]Offshore Wind Power Redesign Key To Adoption, Says Irish Firm [48](theregister.com) [49]10 Posted by [50]BeauHD on Thursday May 18, 2023 @03:00AM from the solving-the-affordability-issue dept. Dublin-based company Gazelle Wind Power has developed a modular floating offshore wind turbine design that it [51]claims is more affordable than traditional designs. The Register reports: While it still has to be anchored to the seafloor, Gazelle's design places the anchor cables on a trio of articulated arms that help the platform move with the motion of the ocean. To ensure the turbine tower itself stays stationary, a counterweight hangs from the center of the platform; Gazelle claims this will reduce the turbine's pitch to less than five degrees, which the company said will greatly reduce wear and tear on the tower. Despite those design changes, the result is a turbine base that Gazelle reckons is smaller, lighter and 30 percent cheaper to deploy compared to traditional semi-submersible designs, it [52]said. Speaking to IEEE Spectrum recently, Gazelle CTO Jason Wormald claimed the counterbalanced turbine was designed from the ground up, so to speak, for the offshore wind industry. Gazelle's design has yet to be fielded - it's working on a pilot project in Portugal with renewable energy firm WAM Horizon, whose Chairman also serves as a non-executive director at Gazelle -- but if test results scale well it could mean every 1GW of third-generation Gazelle towers deployed would use 71kt less steel, preventing around 100kt of carbon dioxide emissions, the company claims. Gazelle also touts its modular design, which it said doesn't require any specialized equipment, like cranes or custom-built launch vessels, as another way in which it reduces environmental impacts. apply tags__________ 170969597 story [53]Youtube [54]Google's New 'Inactive Account' Policy Won't Delete Years of YouTube Videos [55](arstechnica.com) [56]23 Posted by [57]BeauHD on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @11:30PM from the still-figuring-out-the-details dept. An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Google's new inactive account policy already has people up in arms. The company announced on Tuesday that accounts that have gone unused for two years [58]will be deleted, and a lot of people are asking what exactly this means for YouTube content. There are probably millions of videos out there from dead and inactive YouTube creators -- would Google's new data policy mean deleting nearly two decades of online history? A day later, Google now says [59]there will be no digital burning of Alexandria. YouTube's creator liaison, Rene Ritchie, clarified [60]on Twitter that Google has "no plans to delete accounts with YT videos." [61]9to5Google heard the same statement from a Google spokesperson. That is great news, but that's also very vague and runs contrary to what all of Google's current documentation says, including the [62]blog post. Can people keep a Google account alive forever with a single video? [...] It seems like the company is still figuring this out. "It doesn't make sense to delete old YouTube content," adds Ars' Ron Amadeo. "While inactive data for things like Gmail and Google Photos are nothing but a money pit, YouTube content is available to the public, and Google runs ads on those videos, so those videos make money. If there's no creator to share revenue with, that's even better! Culling old videos would not just damage YouTube as a platform, it would also hurt Google's bottom line." apply tags__________ 170968599 story [63]AI [64]AI Threatens Humanity's Future, 61% of Americans Say [65](reuters.com) [66]65 Posted by msmash on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @10:02PM from the closer-look dept. Designers are using Unreal Engine to create virtual renditions of architectural projects that were never fully realized, such as the [73]Hillside Sample Project by Neoscape and Safdie Architects, [74]showcasing Moshe Safdie's original vision for Montreal's Habitat 67 housing complex. The interactive 3D models offer exceptional detail of the structures and highlight the potential of real-time 3D renditions for pitching architectural concepts. Engadget reports: A young Safdie designed Habitat 67 for Montreal's 1967 World's Fair, also known as Expo 67. It was meant to combine the advantages of suburbia (such as gardens and multi-level housing) with the affordability and density of apartments. The affordability didn't pan out, and Safdie ended up producing a smaller-scale version for the fair. Habitat 67 ultimately launched Safdie's career, though, and it's still one of the better-known landmarks in the city. You have a few options for exploring the complex. You can [75]watch a video if you just want a quick overview, but you can also [76]navigate a 3D space using either Google Chrome or a downloadable app. The interactive models let you either roam freely or have Safdie guide you through the project with narration at key points. apply tags__________ 170968815 story [77]Android [78]Google Will Soon Let Pixel Phones Double As Dashcams [79](9to5google.com) [80]17 Posted by [81]BeauHD on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @08:45PM from the extra-set-of-eyes-on-the-road dept. Google mistakenly released a test version of its Personal Safety app that [82]includes a new feature called "Dashcam" on select Android devices. As the name suggests, it allows users to record video and audio while driving in the event of an accident or unexpected situation, with automatic recording triggered when connecting to a specific Bluetooth device and videos automatically deleted after three days unless saved. 9to5Google reports: Once available, the feature can be launched through a new "Dashcam" shortcut in the "Be prepared" section of the home page. Here, you can begin recording manually or view your recent videos. While Dashcam is recording, your phone is still fully usable, including for navigating with Google Maps. Alternatively, you can save power by locking your screen, and the recording will continue. More importantly, Google has built this feature to work without you needing to think much about it. When setting up, you can choose to have recordings begin automatically when you connect to a particular Bluetooth device (e.g., your car stereo or infotainment system) and end when you disconnect. To conserve storage space, your recordings are automatically deleted after three days unless you save them. Additionally, the app says that the videos themselves are compressed, averaging "30 MB per minute," with a maximum recording length of 24 hours. Overall, this feature seems to be impressively well thought out and looks essentially ready to launch. Using a smartphone as a dashcam also makes quite a bit of sense, as your phone probably has a better camera than some cheaper dashcams would offer. It's unclear if this feature will be available on other phones with Google's Personal Safety or exclusive to Pixel phones. apply tags__________ 170968685 story [83]Nintendo [84]The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Becomes Fastest-Selling Game For Any Nintendo System Ever [85](venturebeat.com) [86]13 Posted by [87]BeauHD on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @08:02PM from the record-breaking dept. Montana is now the [96]first U.S. state to ban TikTok after Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed legislation to ban the app from operating in the state. Reuters reports: Montana will make it unlawful for Google and Apple's app stores to offer the TikTok app within its borders. The ban takes effect Jan. 1, 2024. TikTok, which has over 150 million American users, is facing growing calls from U.S. lawmakers and state officials to ban the app nationwide over concerns about potential Chinese government influence over the platform. Gov. Gianforte, a Republican, said the bill will further "our shared priority to protect Montanans from Chinese Communist Party surveillance." Montana, which has a population of just over 1 million people, said TikTok could face fines for each violation and additional fines of $10,000 per day if they violate the ban. It takes effect Jan. 1, 2024. The ban will likely face numerous legal challenges that it violates the First Amendment free speech rights of users. An attempt by then President Donald Trump to ban new downloads of TikTok and WeChat through a Commerce Department order in 2020 was blocked by multiple courts and never took effect. The legislation that Gianforte signed also generally prohibits "the use of all social media applications that collect and provide personal information or data to foreign adversaries on government-issued devices," adds Reuters. It's unclear if the bill signed today would [97]effectively ban all social media in Montana, since most social media networks collect such information and share it with entities in foreign countries. apply tags__________ 170968571 story [98]Verizon [99]Verizon's New Plans Make Sense To Nobody Except Verizon [100](theverge.com) [101]23 Posted by msmash on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @06:40PM from the what's-in-a-name? dept. An anonymous reader [102]shares a report: Hey, did you hear? Verizon has incredibly, out of the goodness of its heart, revealed new phone plans that don't include "bloated" service bundles. How thoughtful! There's just one catch: they're kinda less expensive, except not really, because things that used to be included are now an extra $10 per month each. On the surface, the new plans sound simpler than the current Get More, Play More, etc. There are two options -- an expensive one and a bit less expensive one -- and you add the extra services you want, like the Disney / Hulu bundle or Apple Music Family a la carte. That's nice in theory, but if you're switching from one of the current unlimited plans, it's very likely you'll need to pay more if you want the same things you used to get included in your monthly rate. [...] On top of all that, these plans are just plain confusing. There's an old plan called "Welcome Unlimited" and a new plan called "Unlimited Welcome." Great, makes perfect sense. Also, Verizon is still playing its cute little game of not including "Ultra Wideband" mid-band 5G on its lower-tier plan, only the much slower "Nationwide" version, which is largely just LTE dressed up as 5G. apply tags__________ 170968561 story [103]AI [104]Professor Failed More Than Half His Class After ChatGPT Falsely Claimed It Wrote Their Final Papers [105](rollingstone.com) [106]92 Posted by [107]BeauHD on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @06:00PM from the fighting-ChatGPT-with-ChatGPT dept. A Texas A&M professor failed more than half of his class after ChatGPT [108]falsely claimed the students used the software to write their final assignments. Rolling Stone reports: A number of seniors at Texas A&M University-Commerce who already walked the stage at graduation this year have been temporarily denied their diplomas after a professor ineptly used AI software to assess their final assignments, the partner of a student in his class -- known as DearKick [109]on Reddit -- claims to Rolling Stone. Dr. Jared Mumm, a campus rodeo instructor who also teaches agricultural classes, sent an email on Monday to a group of students informing them that he had submitted grades for their last three essay assignments of the semester. Everyone would be receiving an 'X' in the course, Mumm explained, because he had used "Chat GTP" (the OpenAI chatbot is actually called "ChatGPT") to test whether they'd used the software to write the papers -- and the bot claimed to have authored every single one. "I copy and paste your responses in [ChatGPT] and [it] will tell me if the program generated the content," he wrote, saying he had tested each paper twice. He offered the class a makeup assignment to avoid the failing grade -- which could otherwise, in theory, threaten their graduation status. There's just one problem: ChatGPT doesn't work that way. The bot isn't made to detect material composed by AI -- or even material produced by itself -- and is known to sometimes emit damaging misinformation. With very little prodding, ChatGPT will even claim to have written passages from famous novels such as Crime and Punishment. Educators can choose among a wide variety of effective AI and plagiarism detection tools to assess whether students have completed assignments themselves, including Winston AI and Content at Scale; ChatGPT is not among them. And OpenAI's own tool for determining whether a text was written by a bot has been judged "not very accurate" by a digital marketing agency that recommends tech resources to businesses. In an amusing wrinkle, Mumm's claims appear to be undercut by a simple experiment using ChatGPT. On Tuesday, redditor Delicious_Village112 found an abstract of Mumm's doctoral dissertation on pig farming and submitted a section of that paper to the bot, asking if it might have written the paragraph. "Yes, the passage you shared could indeed have been generated by a language model like ChatGPT, given the right prompt," the program [110]answered. "The text contains several characteristics that are consistent with AI-generated content." At the request of other redditors, Delicious_Village112 also submitted Mumm's email to students about their presumed AI deception, asking the same question. "Yes, I wrote the content you've shared," ChatGPT [111]replied. Yet the bot also clarified: "If someone used my abilities to help draft an email, I wouldn't have a record of it." "A&M-Commerce confirms that no students failed the class or were barred from graduating because of this issue," the school said in a statement. "Dr. Jared Mumm, the class professor, is working individually with students regarding their last written assignments. Some students received a temporary grade of 'X' -- which indicates 'incomplete' -- to allow the professor and students time to determine whether AI was used to write their assignments and, if so, at what level." The university also confirmed that several students had been cleared of any academic dishonesty. "University officials are investigating the incident and developing policies to address the use or misuse of AI technology in the classroom," the statement continued. "They are also working to adopt AI detection tools and other resources to manage the intersection of AI technology and higher education. The use of AI in coursework is a rapidly changing issue that confronts all learning institutions." apply tags__________ 170968467 story [112]Crime [113]Court Orders Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes To Go To Prison [114](cnbc.com) [115]74 Posted by [116]BeauHD on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @05:20PM from the time-to-make-new-friends dept. An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Researchers on Tuesday unveiled a major discovery -- malicious firmware that can wrangle a wide range of residential and small office routers into a network that [126]stealthily relays traffic to command-and-control servers maintained by Chinese state-sponsored hackers. A firmware implant, revealed in a [127]write-up from Check Point Research, contains a full-featured backdoor that allows attackers to establish communications and file transfers with infected devices, remotely issue commands, and upload, download, and delete files. The implant came in the form of firmware images for TP-Link routers. The well-written C++ code, however, took pains to implement its functionality in a "firmware-agnostic" manner, meaning it would be trivial to modify it to run on other router models. The main purpose of the malware appears to relay traffic between an infected target and the attackers' command and control servers in a way that obscures the origins and destinations of the communication. With further analysis, Check Point Research eventually discovered that the control infrastructure was operated by hackers tied to Mustang Panda, an advanced persistent threat actor that both the [128]Avast and [129]ESET security firms say works on behalf of the Chinese government. The researchers discovered the implant while investigating a series of targeted attacks against European foreign affairs entities. The chief component is a backdoor with the internal name Horse Shell. The three main functions of Horse Shell are: a remote shell for executing commands on the infected device; file transfer for uploading and downloading files to and from the infected device; and the exchange of data between two devices using [130]SOCKS5, a protocol for proxying TCP connections to an arbitrary IP address and providing a means for UDP packets to be forwarded. The SOCKS5 functionality seems to be the ultimate purpose of the implant. By creating a chain of infected devices that establish encrypted connections with only the closest two nodes (one in each direction), it's difficult for anyone who stumbles upon one of them to learn the origin or ultimate destination or the true purpose of the infection. As Check Point researchers wrote: "Learning from history, router implants are often installed on arbitrary devices with no particular interest, with the aim to create a chain of nodes between the main infections and real command and control," Check Point researchers wrote in a [131]shorter write-up. "In other words, infecting a home router does not mean that the homeowner was specifically targeted, but rather that they are only a means to a goal." apply tags__________ 170968307 story [132]Entertainment [133]Netflix Alerts Telecoms Groups Over Looming Account-Sharing Crackdown [134](ft.com) [135]31 Posted by msmash on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @04:01PM from the shape-of-things-to-come dept. Netflix has held talks with UK telecoms groups that carry the streaming group's service ahead of a crackdown on account sharing expected later this month. From a report: The US group, which has said the free use of its platform has hit its ability to invest in new TV and films, plans to start warning customers over account-sharing violations in the coming weeks, according to people familiar with the situation. Telecoms groups that use Netflix as part of bundled TV content have held meetings in the past week over the planned warnings, people familiar with the talks said. Companies such as Sky, BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk offer Netflix as part of bundled deals on broadband and TV content. But those close to the talks said there was [136]a risk of complaints from some subscribers, many of whom have grown accustomed to sharing their account details with family and friends, activity to which the company had previously turned a blind eye. One person described it as being a "good partner" to groups that offer the service as part of their subscriptions. Telecoms companies' call centres are likely to field questions and complaints once the plans are enacted, according to a person familiar with the issue, which has meant that they have needed close co-operation with Netflix. apply tags__________ 170967835 story [137]Communications [138]Telcos Draw Up Proposal To Charge Big Tech for EU 5G Rollout [139](reuters.com) [140]41 Posted by msmash on Wednesday May 17, 2023 @03:20PM from the how-about-that dept. Big tech companies accounting for more than 5% of a telecoms provider's peak average internet traffic should [141]help fund the rollout of 5G and broadband across Europe, according to a draft proposal by the telecoms industry. From a report: The proposal is part of feedback to the European Commission which launched a consultation into the issue in February. The deadline for responses is Friday. Alphabet's Google, Apple, Facebook-owner Meta, Amazon, Netflix and TikTok would most likely be hit with fees, according to industry estimates. Google, Apple, Meta, Netflix, Amazon and Microsoft together account for more than half of data internet traffic. The document, which was reviewed by Reuters and has not been published, was compiled by telecoms lobbying groups GSMA and ETNO. They represent 160 operators in Europe, including Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia. Telecom operators have lobbied for years for leading technology companies to help foot the bill for 5G and broadband roll-out, saying that they create a huge part of the region's internet traffic. About 80 percent of new cars sold in Norway are [146]battery-powered. As a result, the air is cleaner, the streets are quieter and the grid hasn't collapsed. The New York Times: Last year, 80 percent of new-car sales in Norway were electric, putting the country at the vanguard of the shift to battery-powered mobility. It has also turned Norway into an observatory for figuring out what the electric vehicle revolution might mean for the environment, workers and life in general. The country will end the sales of internal combustion engine cars in 2025. Norway's experience suggests that electric vehicles bring benefits without the dire consequences predicted by some critics. There are problems, of course, including unreliable chargers and long waits during periods of high demand. Auto dealers and retailers have had to adapt. The switch has reordered the auto industry, making Tesla the best-selling brand and marginalizing established carmakers like Renault and Fiat. But the air in Oslo, Norway's capital, is measurably cleaner. The city is also quieter as noisier gasoline and diesel vehicles are scrapped. Oslo's greenhouse gas emissions have fallen 30 percent since 2009, yet there has not been mass unemployment among gas station workers and the electrical grid has not collapsed. Some lawmakers and corporate executives portray the fight against climate change as requiring grim sacrifice. "With E.V.s, it's not like that," said Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian E.V. Association, which represents owners. "It's actually something that people embrace." Norway began promoting electric vehicles in the 1990s to support Think, a homegrown electric vehicle start-up that Ford Motor owned for a few years. Battery-powered vehicles were exempted from value-added and import taxes and from highway tolls. The government also subsidized the construction of fast charging stations, crucial in a country nearly as big as California with just 5.5 million people. The combination of incentives and ubiquitous charging "took away all the friction factors," said Jim Rowan, the chief executive of Volvo Cars, based in neighboring Sweden. The policies put Norway more than a decade ahead of the United States. The Biden administration aims for [147]50 percent of new-vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, a milestone Norway passed in 2019. apply tags__________ [148]« Newer [149]Older » Slashdot Top Deals Slashdot Top Deals [150]Slashdot Deals Slashdot Poll Recently, an open letter signed by tech leaders, researchers proposes delaying AI development.
