Saying "the Web turned 35" in 2026 usually points to the public announcement of
the World Wide Web project on 6 August 1991, when Tim Berners-Lee posted an
announcement to the alt.hypertext newsgroup.

There is not only one meaningful birth date. The Web has several milestones:

  1989  Berners-Lee wrote his information-management proposal at CERN.
  1990  Core Web technology and the first Web server/site were developed.
  1991  The project was publicly announced to the wider Internet community.
  1993  CERN made the Web software available on a royalty-free/public-domain
        basis, removing a major barrier to adoption.

Therefore an anniversary document should say which milestone it means instead of
pretending the Web appeared in one instant.

For this archive, "35 years" refers to the 6 August 1991 public announcement.
