The craft involved Photoshop or Fireworks, slicing images, repeating background strips, table cells, framesets and a strong instinct for which pixel belonged where. Responsive design as we know it was not the model, but skilled builders learned tricks that made fixed-era layouts behave across the screens they actually encountered.
