A homepage is not just the newest thing.

It can explain where you are, what this place values, what has changed, what is permanent, where newcomers should begin and where repeat visitors should go next. It can be a lobby, a map and a sign hung over the door.

Replacing all of that with "latest posts" is a design choice, not a law of nature.
