A domain does not make you sovereign. Registrars exist. Registries exist. Hosting can disappear. Laws apply. DNS is infrastructure, not magic.

Still, a domain gives a project a durable name that can point somewhere else tomorrow. You can move hosts without telling your audience to follow a new account. You can split services across machines. You can make the public address belong to the project instead of the vendor.

That is a small but meaningful difference.
