Remember when the Internet was sold to us as the great equalizer? A level playing field where anyone with an idea, a voice, or a vision could carve out their space, connect with others, and create something bigger than themselves?
Fast forward to 2025, and it's hard not to feel like that dream has been swallowed whole by corporate greed and control. The open web we once believed in is now fenced off behind walled gardens, algorithms designed to serve profits, and endless pay-to-play schemes. Small creators struggle to be seen unless they pay the toll, and independent voices are drowned out by those who can afford to dominate the conversation.
Even access to information, the Internet's most basic promise, feels rigged. News is gated behind paywalls, while the free content is often designed to manipulate or mislead. Meanwhile, the companies running the show collect more data than we can comprehend, turning our lives into commodities to be bought and sold.
It's heartbreaking to watch something that once felt limitless now feel so constricted. The Internet was supposed to be ours, a place where power dynamics didn't matter. Instead, it feels like one more system rigged against the little guy.
I can't help but wonder: Is it too late to take it back? Or is this just the way things are now?
