WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TARTARIA TO BE TRUE?

This is not a diagnosis of believers. People arrive at the story for
different reasons, and no single explanation fits everybody.

The story does have an emotional architecture. It begins with something
many people can see: older buildings often are astonishing. Civic halls,
rail stations, libraries, bridges and exposition architecture can look more
ambitious and beautiful than much of the disposable environment built now.

Modern life can feel poorer than the future people were promised. Housing is
expensive. Infrastructure is patched. Institutions are difficult to trust.
Historical knowledge is fragmented across specialist books, archives and
poorly indexed collections. An old photograph can feel like a door into a
world that was more coherent, more skilled and more beautiful.

The Tartaria narrative gathers those feelings into one theft story. Instead
of "history is complicated and I inherited an unequal world," it offers "my
inheritance was stolen." Instead of "wealth accumulated through many social,
political and economic processes," it offers "a hidden elite took everything."
Instead of "I do not understand how this was constructed," it offers "the
builders possessed forbidden technology."

That may help explain some of the story's appeal. It does not prove the
story's historical claims, and it does not mean every person interested in
Tartaria is motivated by the same thing.

The better response is not to sneer at the desire for lost grandeur. Take the
building seriously. Find the architect. Find the labor force. Find the
materials, the budget, the newspaper, the engineering problem and the
photograph of the work in progress.

The documented past is often more astonishing than the replacement myth.

Thousands of workers really did build enormous structures. Engineers really
did raise buildings. Cities really did lift streets. People really did move
entire masonry structures. World fairs really did create temporary fantasy
cities. Human beings did all of that without a vanished super-civilization.

That is not the boring explanation.

That is the amazing part.
