THEY COULD BUILD THAT: THE 19TH-CENTURY MACHINE "They could not have built this with horses and hand tools" sounds like a question about technology, but it often starts with a false picture of the 19th century. Horses and hand tools remained important. They were not the whole economy. The late 1800s had railroads, telegraphs, steam engines, factories, machine shops, industrial mining, mass brick production, iron foundries, steel mills, steam-powered sawmills, elevators, hoists, derricks, cranes, block and tackle, surveying instruments, explosives for excavation, specialized trades and large coordinated labor forces. Large construction was a supply-chain problem, not a magic trick. Stone was quarried, dressed and shipped. Brick was manufactured in enormous numbers. Iron and steel moved by rail and water. Contractors coordinated masons, carpenters, ironworkers, plasterers, glaziers, engineers and laborers. Architectural drawings, specifications and pattern books allowed work to be divided among specialists without requiring a vanished civilization to remember the recipe. Chicago's building history makes this visible. The Encyclopedia of Chicago describes the rise of general contractors who coordinated dozens of building specialists and hundreds of workers. It also describes cheap manufactured building supplies, foundation innovation and the transition from masonry to iron-frame construction. The Chicago Water Tower is a useful individual case. The Library of Congress HABS record identifies its architect as William W. Boyington, dates its erection to 1869, describes its Joliet limestone and documents the iron standpipe it enclosed. It is an extraordinary building. It also has a named architect, a known purpose, a known material, a documented date and a survey record. The Brooklyn Bridge makes the same point at a larger scale. The American Society of Civil Engineers records its enormous towers, four galvanized-wire cables, cable-spinning process and original transportation functions. The Library of Congress holds specifications for iron work, anchorages, granite, steam machinery and later components. The right question is not: HOW COULD THEY BUILD THAT? Ask: WHO DESIGNED IT? WHO PAID FOR IT? WHO SUPPLIED THE MATERIAL? WHO COORDINATED THE LABOR? WHAT MACHINES WERE AVAILABLE? WHAT RECORDS SURVIVE? The answers can still be astonishing. The point is not that the work was easy. The point is that it was performed by real engineers and workers using an industrial system that was already very capable.
