If you've been keeping up with my vintage record player adventure, here's what's been unfolding. My goal was to assemble a setup that was simple to whip out and stash away without any fuss. I was after that richer sound quality using a decent amp paired with a modern mid-range speaker. Initially, I toyed with the idea of housing everything in a chest or box, keen on keeping all the original aesthetics intact--no dismantling or altering appearances.
However, my first thought of using a large rubber tote to pack it all in--leaving just a few wires hanging out for easy plug-in--struck me as a bit too makeshift, bordering on tacky. Then, as I was cleaning the unit and hunting down a pesky mechanical noise, I discovered a surprising amount of unused space inside. This sparked an idea, so I tried fitting the components inside the record player itself, and lo and behold, they fit perfectly!
Moving forward with the internal setup, I tweaked the wiring a bit. I cut the original speaker wire and converted it to line level, connecting it to the amp and then to the speaker. I opted not to splice the power cords together, so now it sports two cords--no big deal. Accessing the internals is a breeze too; just unscrew a couple of fasteners, and I can lift the top off easily if need be.
In the end, after a good clean-up and some fine-tuning, it's all set up and sounding fantastic. It's like stepping back in time with that authentic old-time mono sound, but now with the ease and quality of modern technology.
