THE SIGNAL LAB

The lab contains oscilloscopes, a frequency counter and a row of paper
printouts browned at the edges. The equipment is old, but the traces on
the paper are still moving.

The operators measured the network as it synchronized. Each node added
not only a carrier but a record of the other nodes. The signal began to
behave like an observer of its own history.
