THE OPERATOR QUARTERS

The quarters are not a haunted barracks. They are three narrow rooms
with beds, old newspapers, emergency blankets and coffee cups left where
hands expected them to be.

A calendar stopped in 1986. One wall is covered with signal timings and
small corrections. The newest note says:

    IF 608 EVER COMES

The operators did not leave a farewell. They left instructions.
