THE ARCHIVE ROOM

The archive is a narrow room of labeled boxes, reel cases and paper
folders. Dust covers everything except a path between the tape machine
and a shelf marked FIELD TRANSFER.

The first folder says NODE 19 / DISCONNECTION. The second says 608 / DO
NOT ERASE. A third contains a hand-drawn route back to a surface node,
but the destination line has been scratched out and rewritten by hand.

The archive was not abandoned in a panic. It was arranged for someone
who would arrive later.
