INCIDENT 33: THE KOSHKONONG SIGNAL

It is after midnight at the NITETIME.NET Garage. The big door is shut
against the Wisconsin night. Fluorescent tubes buzz overhead. A fan
rattles near the ceiling. The old receiver has played static for twenty
minutes. Nobody is broadcasting.

Then the receiver clicks. Not squelch. Not interference. A mechanical
click, like something picked up the other end of a telephone.

The green display changes by itself:

    33

Three slow tones follow. Then a voice appears beneath the static.

    KOSHKONONG NODE.
    DO NOT ANSWER.

The receiver goes silent. Across the garage, the beige terminal wakes.
