NITETIME.NET SYSTEM OVERVIEW ============================ LAKE KOSHKONONG NODE // WISCO 608 // SIGNAL ACTIVE This is the public tour of what has been built behind NITETIME.NET. It describes the network for visitors while deliberately leaving out private infrastructure, administrative access, credentials and recovery instructions. THE PUBLIC DOORS ================ MAIN SITE --------- The media, video, music and navigation hub. https://nitetime.net LIVE VIDEO ---------- The Nitetime broadcast door for live video and station activity. https://live.nitetime.net BBS --- A modern community room for posts, projects and long conversations. https://bbs.nitetime.net CHAT AND IRC ------------ Browser chat and traditional IRC lead to the same Nitetime conversation. https://chat.nitetime.net irc.nitetime.net MUD --- A persistent text world containing rooms, objects, characters, machines and connected pieces of station lore. https://mud.nitetime.net NEWS ---- A real discussion/news service for threaded messages and community groups. https://news.nitetime.net FILES ----- The home for downloadable releases, comics, images and larger artifacts. https://files.nitetime.net GOPHER ------ The text-first reading room: archives, essays, field notes, music, radio, UFO files, recovered web fragments, stories and technical history. gopher://gopher.nitetime.net https://gopher.nitetime.net THE GOPHER MACHINE ================== Gopher is a file-based publishing surface that works both with native Gopher clients and through a browser gateway. Native Gopher remains a complete experience; the browser view adds modern links and shared navigation. Major public shelves include About Nitetime, Archive, Art Department, Commodore Lab, Lake Koshkonong, Music, Nitetime Network, Nite Station, Old Web, Radio, Raccoon Cinema, Recovered Files and UFO Files. The archive is organized into rooms instead of an algorithmic stream. New writing and recovered material are prepared in an editorial workspace and then synchronized into the public reading room. VERONICA SEARCH =============== Nitetime has a Veronica-style search terminal for its own published Gopherspace: https://gopher.nitetime.net/veronica/ It searches Nitetime content only. It does not crawl arbitrary Gopher servers or the wider Internet, and it does not expose hidden maintenance areas. The index follows published menus; a file is not public merely because it exists in a workspace. LIVE SYSTEM STATUS ================== The station publishes a safe, aggregate status view: https://gopher.nitetime.net/status/ It can show broad availability and totals for the network's public services, archive and search. It does not publish usernames, visitor addresses, private messages, logs, credentials or administrative details. THE BROADCAST ORGAN =================== Nitetime has a real MIDI-controlled organ that can keep a nighttime broadcast running without a person sitting beside it. The organ system can select and play pieces, recognize duplicate files by their contents, inspect musical metadata, remember current and upcoming pieces, transition between pieces, recover from ordinary interruptions, retain playback history and synchronize a public overlay with actual playback. An analysis assistant may suggest musical interpretations asynchronously. Those suggestions remain separate from the authoritative broadcast record; unverified model guesses are not aired as facts. THE MUD FIELD CAMERA ==================== The MUD includes a Field Camera system. Players can frame a subject, take a photograph, review their photo history and preserve the state of a scene at the moment the shutter is pressed. Photographs begin private. Taking a picture and publishing it are separate actions. Recognizable players are not automatically made public subjects, and shared visual canon remains controlled by the people responsible for the world. Real MUD snapshots have been successfully used in external image development tests, including scenes with another real player character. Automatic photo-lab development and automatic Files/Gopher publication remain future work. AI-ASSISTED PUBLISHING ====================== AI is used as a workshop assistant for selected creative and archival tasks. A completed release can become a public Files package and a derived Gopher record containing transcripts, notes, credits, alt text and links to the larger artifact. The boundary is editorial: AI may help transform and organize material, but it does not turn unverified claims into station facts or publish private material merely because it can read it. THE GLOBAL CONTROL BAR ====================== Browser-facing Nitetime services share a common navigation layer. It helps visitors move among the main site, live stream, BBS, chat, MUD, Gopher and Files without forcing them into one application. This browser navigation is separate from native Gopher menus, application navigation and MUD commands. Native services remain independently useful when JavaScript is unavailable. THE ARCHIVE =========== The archive holds local history, Lake Koshkonong notes, UFO reports, radio and shortwave material, Commodore experiments, recovered web fragments, creative writing, memoir, music, Nite Station fiction, technical essays, comics, art and public project records. Some shelves are factual, some speculative, some fictional and some intentionally difficult to classify. Their labels and surrounding notes are part of the context. WHAT THIS PUBLIC TOUR LEAVES OUT ================================ This page intentionally omits public IP addresses, internal ports, localhost endpoints, filesystem paths, operating-system accounts, database details, administrative consoles, shell commands, credentials, keys, secrets, firewall rules, process information, logs and recovery procedures. Those details belong in private operator documentation, not in a public Gopher room. THE POINT OF THE WHOLE THING ============================ Nitetime is an experiment in building a small network with memory. It has media, conversation, games, text worlds, music, search, archives, live status and machines that continue working after the operator leaves the room. The pieces are connected enough to feel like one station, but separate enough that no single application defines the entire place. There is a broadcast somewhere in the building. There is a conversation in another room. The MUD is still running. The organ is playing. The archive is growing. The signal is active.
