WISCONSIN RETRO-FUTURISM

Nitetime has something many Internet projects never acquire: a
sense of place.

That identification makes the system feel less like a generic site
in an unspecified datacenter and more like a peculiar transmission
originating from one corner of Wisconsin.

The location is part geography and part mythology:

  garages and server racks
  radio gear and antennas
  dark roads and lake water
  storm systems and weather reports
  beige computers and green phosphor screens
  fluorescent light and coffee cups
  handwritten work orders
  chrome flying saucers
  strange things heard over radios after midnight

The tone is rural and technological at once. It can be lonely without
being bleak, strange without being hostile, and retro without being
only kitsch.


AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE

The aesthetic is not simply "the 1990s." It combines late-night
local television, public-access improvisation, garage workshops,
Commodore machines, analog instruments, old network protocols,
obscure movies, UFO reports, electronic music, and Wisconsin roads.

It feels like the Internet as it might have developed in a slightly
different timeline--one where every county kept its transmitter,
every small station acquired a server, and a flying saucer could
request a login after the weather report.

There is comfort in the central image: somewhere near Lake
Koshkonong, long after most of Wisconsin has gone dark, a little
station is still transmitting.
