THE LIVING NETWORK ================== Nitetime.net is a network of independently operated services, not only a domain containing Web pages. Its doors have included: nitetime.net main Web and media hub live.nitetime.net scheduled or continuous broadcast bbs.nitetime.net community bulletin board chat.nitetime.net Web access to chat irc.nitetime.net native IRC service mud.nitetime.net persistent Evennia text world gopher.nitetime.net native Gopher archive Around those services are original music, public-domain and archival media, file distribution, FTP-style and Usenet/NNTP experiments, Commodore programs, radio material, art, fiction, technical notes, and recovered transmissions. Availability changes as experiments enter and leave the workbench. The Network directory records the clearest current doors: /network/ THE GARAGE YOU CAN ENTER ------------------------ The Evennia-powered MUD demonstrates how infrastructure and fiction can become the same object. A visitor can enter the Nitetime Garage late at night in Wisconsin. Fluorescent lights hum above a scarred bench. An old receiver waits near a beige computer with a green phosphor display. Cables, microphones, adapters, tools, and coffee cups occupy the surfaces. A corkboard carries weather, reports, and work orders. The lake is outside; station equipment is below; Studio 608 is nearby. The project is no longer merely describing a fictional facility. It contains one that can be walked through. CROSS-SERVICE STORYTELLING -------------------------- The network makes a larger kind of story possible. A transmission on the broadcast can point toward a Gopher document. The document can contain coordinates or a password. That clue can open something in the MUD. A recovered tape inside the MUD can correspond to a real audio file elsewhere on Nitetime. Website, protocol, broadcast, archive, and game become different entrances to one place. The system does not need to implement every possible connection at once. The important fact is architectural: the doors are real, and the mythology is capable of traveling through them.
