Where Wulf?

"Where hast thou been?" A trailer for Robert Eggers' Christmas release Werwulf has appeared.

An eagle-eyed columnist for i09 has pointed out that Eggers is releasing additional Werwulf stuff every month on the full moon until its release date.

(if you dig back just a smidge from this trailer's link, you will see it was originally released on September 26th, a full moon.)

ok...

I have been excited for this to come out. The trailer is...A LOT. It's very overwrought. Not saying that is a bad thing, but wow. It's definitely full throttle Eggers.

I love that he's got his actors doing English accents before the Great Vowel Shift.

Nothing like an Eggers movie to make me want to go wash my hands. Yes I will be seeing this thank you.

I will absolutely be running to see this but at the same time with every new movie that comes out I feel wistful for the days when movies had colors in them. Remember that?

There is a certain popular Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode that, due to one character's unusual pronunciation during the movie, often gets called Warwilf by fans. That's what came to mind when I saw the title.

See, the thing about the vaguely middle ages is that nobody ever washed their face. Also they had a special kind of mud back then, it was muddier. And if you tried to dye fabric with woad, for example, the werewulfs would smite you. Also, the sky had a smell, and it was mud, except worse.

VVerevvolf.

I feel like recent Eggers movies are elevating the style into a level of camp that a lot of people are gonna criticize but I'm finding ever more enjoyable. Just keep turning that dial up man, let's see where it goes.

If Nosferatu had never happened, I'd be more excited for this. But now I'm keeping expectations low - Nosferatu had the same cast and director and was underlit, underwritten, and deadly dull. I was so excited for it, fell asleep in the theater the first watch through, watched it AGAIN in the theater to make sure I gave it a fair shot, and it was the most inert unscary lead-footed thing...

So here's hoping we get more of gonzo Lighthouse Eggers and less deadly serious Eggers.

I would neither have a big dish of beef chow mein from Lee Ho Fook's nor enjoy a piña colada from Trader Vic's with this werewolf.

...am I imagining it, or is this not the case? They're doing a bit of a Middle English accent, vaguely West Country, but I am hearing a lot of post-GVS vowels there. "Child" would have been pronounced "cheeld", "he" should be "hay", "raving" should be "raahving" etc.

Oh, my. The film techniques age well, a brilliant director, swirling of shademud film grain from various films, im reminded of The Golem. well paced scenes that draw one in. The terror, the dark wooded focus is suspension, thats hard.
If this trailer represents the last work, Bravo.

Remember back to the golden age of cinema when entertainments like Barbie, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Bugonia, Coyote vs. Acme, Anora, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, and Train Dreams filled our screens and tickled the rods and cones of our young and naive eyes, and our souls danced in a kaleidoscope of pigments that detonated in a spectral reverie?

But a faint memory, those... incredibly vibrant and popular movies of the past couple of years.

Anyway, snark aside: This looks great and I'm glad we have directors like Eggers.

They're doing a bit of a Middle English accent

That's the point, isn't it? Middle English 1100-1500, GVS 1400-1700.

I am hearing a lot of post-GVS vowels there

True, but you wouldn't expect every 21st century actor to be able to reproduce a pre-GVS accent perfectly.

I was really let down by The Northman, and haven't heard a lot good about Nosferatu, but consarn it The VVitch and The Lighthouse were so good I feel I have to give this a shot

I have not seen The Northman, and I found Nosferatu boring. I did absolutely love both The VVitch and The Lighthouse, each in their own special way.

I'm def going to see this (probably not in theater) but will try to temper my expectations.

I started with Nosferatu, which went over great in a packed cinema (and I liked it too); then caught up with The VVitch, which was even better; but The Northman was possibly my favourite. Loved the atmosphere, and always enjoy seeing Iceland on screen.

Must get around to The Lighthouse before this new one arrives...

I might've quite liked The Northman had I not watched Valhalla Rising first. For me, like eating exquisite chocolate then getting a mouthful of inferior stuff, I blame the proximity in viewings

Enjoyed The VVitch and this looks good, The Lighthouse could've been a lot of things other than a romp if not for Dafoe
