Mr. Peabody, let's go back to where it all started
CogDog created a bookmarklet to root the earliest archive of a web page from out of the Wayback Machine. Metafilter's is from October 13, 1999.

I opened the link for baby Metafilter in another tab, read a couple of other things, and then "came back" to what I believed was current Metafilter.
"Huh? Did I accidentally change the font size?" is the only thing that made me suspicious.
What a timeless design!
(Yes, I'm using the 'classic' theme.)

Current metaphors of the Internet include a futuristic highway of data, an interconnected labyrinth of rodent holes, or a globe encircling web. New computer tools have greatly simplified the navigation of this vast landscape of world-wide information
Yeah, it's a real head scratcher that 'labyrinth of rodent holes' didn't catch on, right?
...Tho I guess that is sort of how I conceive of the current leadership in tech.

Hah, kinda like binders of women. Old stiff white guys sure can turn a phrase.

"Binders of women" got a reference in something older we were watching or listening to recently and I had a momentary lapse of thought as I realized that happened fourteen years ago. As with "series of tubes," it's never really left my consciousness; it's one of those things that will have always been said at some point last year.
(c.f. also Randy Moss's description of a paying a fine in 2005 in "straight cash, homie.")
