He Watches Over All Of Us Now
British actor Anthony Head, best known for his roles in TV shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, Merlin and Little Britain, has died at the age of 72.
Anthony Head was born into a theatrical family; father Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head was a filmmaker, and mother Helen Shingler was an actress. Older brother Murray Head also became an actor himself - and in fact, both brothers bookended the role of Freddie in the original run of the musical Chess in 1989 (Murray originated the role, while Anthony held the part when it closed).
He largely worked in theater in the 1970s, taking on small roles in television and advertising in the 1980s. One such series of ads for Nescafe Gold Blend coffee turned heads; Head was cast alongside actress Sharon Maughan, playing a couple involved in a slow-burn courtship fueled by Gold Blend. Sometime during this period he returned to the stage briefly - playing Dr. Frank-n-furter in a West End revival of The Rocky Horror Show (alongside Craig Ferguson as Brad Majors, and I would KILL for a photo of them both).
But shortly after this he took on the role for which he is best known - Rupert Giles, school librarian and Watcher for Sarah Michelle Gellars' Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The part seemed almost stereotypically strait-laced at first (in one episode, Buffy dismissively scoffs that "his diapers were probably tweed"), but Head - and the show - went on to give him hidden depths, including a hinted-at daredevil past, combat skill, and a steely ruthlessness. The show's creators even tapped into Head's musical past with an all-musical episode, "Once More With Feeling", which allowed characters the chance to give voice to their deepest thoughts. The show snuck in a couple of other musical interludes for him with dream sequences or other moments. His singing on Buffy also lead him to a role in the film Repo - The Genetic Opera. Sadly, a spin-off series devoted to his character, "Ripper", never passed the planning stages.
After departing Buffy, Head returned to England, regularly making guest appearances or taking smaller roles in both US and British TV - turning up inDoctor Who, Merlin, Ted Lasso, and Bridgerton.
He is survived by two daughters.

This is so sad and unexpected! Only 72. I'm a huge BtVS fan and on a show with so many great characters, Giles was singularly wonderful. Head was perfect for the role. (Also enjoyed him on Ted Lasso. The man had range!) Anthony Head recorded an album called MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS, I still have a copy of that CD and I'm going to find it and play it and drink a cup of tea and thoughtfully clean my glasses ... repeatedly.

I first saw him in VR.5, a one season TV show on Fox back in 1995. And he looked so much younger than he did just two years later in Buffy. He was excellent in all his roles and his death is a loss to us all.

I'm so sad to hear this news.
Here he is with Craig Ferguson, discussing Rocky Horror, among many other things. These two seem to be genuinely good friends and Tony's laughter is so genuine. It also features his daughter, born during the production of Rocky Horror, it turns out.
I knew him from Buffy, but as others have said, I always enjoyed seeing him anywhere else I'd unexpectedly see him. I'd say to my wife, "Hey it's Giles!" for which she had no context, not having ever watched that show. But she got to know him through Ted Lasso, so it's okay. Too many of the Buffy cast are gone.

He was excellent as Sir Walter Elliot in whichever Persuasion adaptation that was. Played him as exactly the odiously witless status-chaser that Austen wrote, but left just enough on the table to still be watchable.

Thank you for that! Persuasion is my favorite Austen book. I looked it up and he was in the 2007 tv movie version, currently available in the US on Hulu and Britbox. I've never seen that version, but I can already imagine Head as the absolutely ridiculous Sir Walter.

Shocked. It's still sinking in.
I don't think I can recommend Repo: the Genetic Opera but it's the weirdest thing I've seen all year.
Sadly, a spin-off series devoted to his character, "Ripper", never passed the planning stages.
I think that was for the best. I'd say it was a side of the character best seen in small doses, but very good when seen. Would you like me to convince you?

I'm so sad for his poor daughters, having lost their mum just months ago. And this is so unexpected, he was so young.
I too first saw him in VR5, and the Gold Blend/Nescafe commercials had started showing kind of around the same time here in the States, and I was quite smitten. His presence on Buffy was what made me decide to watch the show in the first place. He was amazing as Rupert Giles, and his other Rupert, Mannion, was such a loathsome toad and he played it so very well.
I've been on the fence about doing a Buffy rewatch, afraid that all the toxicity of the subsequent years with so much of the cast and crew would ruin a fandom that was hugely important to me, but I think now I really need to.

It's fun to remember that when Buffy debuted, he was the most recognizable person in the cast for most people (at least those of us who were not daytime soap fans) solely on the basis of those coffee commercials. He held the show together, and the proof is how the show gave in to its worst instincts during those stretches in Seasons 6 and 7 when Head was unavailable.

I know that you loved him. And he has proven more than once that he loved you. You couldn't have known that would happen. The coming months are gonna be hard, I suspect, on all of us. But if it's guilt you're looking for, Buffy, I'm not your man. All you will get from me is my support, and my respect." - as Giles in BtVS

Like so many of y'all I came to know Anthony Head via BtVS. Rupert deserved happiness, but unfortunately the show gave him the murder of his girlfriend. (I don't remember much more of Rupert's character arc, except being exasperated with some of what Season 7 made him do; but Season 7 was bad for everyone...)
I hope Head had more happiness in his life than Rupert did. I'm happy to hear others chiming in with the links that seem to show he was the real deal, and I wish I'd known his other work better while he was still with us.

It was wild for me watching him in Ted Lasso, because (particularly in Season 3, when he's "mentoring" Nate), he's such a funhouse-mirror version of Rupert Giles, play-acting the father-figure role that Nate desires so badly but with none of the warmth, caring, and sincerity that Giles had.

I'd only seen him in Buffy before his run in Ted Lasso, and he was one of my favorite parts of the former (in the latter, he seemed like one of those film supervillains who seems to have died only to be seen in the final shot, smirking on a departing private jet). He was a grounded center for Buffy, and I always wanted to hear more about his story. That speaks to his ability to sell the character and the plot with simple presence and understatement.
That he was Murray (JCS Judas) Head's brother was a real surprise. I stopped watching Buffy somewhere around season four, so I never saw the musical episode. I may have to hunt that down.
