Green shoots bring hope after bushfires in the Grampians

Green shoots bring hope after bushfires in the Grampians. New growth is sprouting in the fire-ravished Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, but an ecologist fears for the future. (Australia)

That was lovely to see!

On a side note, Australian place names can sometimes confuse me - being in the UK I first read the title as referring to the Grampians in Scotland.

Not in the UK, but I was similarly unaware that Australia had its own Grampians. However, the identity of the poster would have clued me in even without the parenthetical at the end..

(Also, one doesn't expect the original Grampians to be much ravaged by "bushfires"..)

Nice to hear about signs of recovery, in any case. But yeah, some of those areas were pretty thoroughly and terrifyingly torched - I presume some recovery is almost certain but restoration to anything like the prior state might take a very long time, if it happens at all.

Last, and least.. whoever named a whole class several classes of plant species "grass trees" is going on my list..

Speaking as one who lives in the edge of said Scottish Grampians, I say, give it a few years. This last summer was the dryest I've ever seen it and there's plenty of bracken and pine trees to burn. I suppose we'll have "forest fires" instead though.
