Movie: The Rover

10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves' brother, and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey. This is the thinking and feeling person's Mad Max. Fine acting with Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson. It's grim and gritty post-apocalypse. The vibe is that things have gone to crap but people do their best, even if their best is the worst. That is still somehow worth it.

Thanks for this. Perfect dessert to follow the Thanksgiving marengo.

I've watched this film a number of times, and have described it to friends and colleagues with the phrase "If you want a picture of Australia's future, imagine Gina Rinehart's boot stamping on a human face - for ever."

I thought this was very engaging until Pattinson turned up. My feeling was they signed him up as it would help them secure funding, realised when he got to set that he couldn't do an Australian accent, got him to do am American one instead but he's no good at that either and so they have a film where Cletus from the Simpsons turns up after half an hour and it makes little sense. Pearce is as watchable as ever but Pattinson is so dreadful he singlehandedly knocks at least a star off the rating for the film as a whole. The campfire scene stands out in my memory as a particularly egregious example of someone wanting to do a scene with serious acting and it falls very flat.

One of my favourite comfort movies, not sure what that says about me.
