Liberal-appointed Canadian senators reject motion to recognize
Genocide of Pontic Greeks
Η καναδική Γερουσία την Τρίτη 27 Νοεμβρίου 2018 απέρριψε την πρόταση για
την αναγνώριση της γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων του Πόντου.
Η πρόταση - που υποβλήθηκε από τον Έλληνα γερουσιαστή Λεωνίδα Χουσάκο -
έλαβε 21 ψήφους υπέρ, 32 ψήφους κατά και 16 αποχές.
Αν περνούσε η πρόταση, θα είχε αναγνωριστεί η γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων του
Πόντου από το 1916 έως το 1923 και θα είχε καταδικάσει κάθε προσπάθεια
άρνησης ή στρέβλωσης μιας ιστορικής αλήθειας ως κάτι λιγότερο από
γενοκτονία, ένα έγκλημα κατά της ανθρωπότητας και θα είχε ορίσει η 19η
Μαΐου κάθε χρόνο σε όλο τον Καναδά ως ημέρα μνήμης των 353.000 Ελλήνων
του Πόντου που σκοτώθηκαν ή εκδιώχθηκαν από τα σπίτια τους.
Ο φιλελεύθερος ιθαγενής Γερουσιαστής Sinclair επισήμανε ότι απέχει από
την ψηφοφορία διότι, αν και πιστεύει ότι η Ποντιακή Γενοκτονία ισχύει,
δεν συμπεριλαμβάνει όλες τις γενοκτονίες κατά των Ελλήνων που έγιναν
στην περιοχή την εποχή εκείνη.
Το Τουρκικό Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών έκανε εντατικές διπλωματικές
προσπάθειες για να απορριφθεί η πρόταση από την Καναδική Γερουσία,
σύμφωνα με διπλωματικές πηγές.
Οι πηγές που μίλησαν υπό την προϋπόθεση της ανωνυμίας ανέφεραν ότι ο
υπουργός Εξωτερικών της Τουρκίας Μεβλου Γκαβουσόγλου μίλησε
τηλεφωνικά με τον καναδικό ομόλογό του Χρύστια Φρίλαντ τη Δευτέρα 26
Νοεμβρίου 2018 επί του θέματος.
Καμία δήλωση, προσπάθεια ή αντίδραση δεν έγινε από την Ελλάδα.
Ο Γερουσιαστής Λεωνίδας Χουσάκος κατακεραύνωσε την απόφαση της
Κυβέρνησης Trudeau να καταψηφίσει την πρόταση στην Καναδική γερουσία η
οποία θα αναγνώριζε τη γενοκτονία των Ποντίων Ελλήνων από την Οθωμανική
αυτοκρατορία στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα.
Ο Γερουσιαστής Χουσάκος είπε ότι με την αναγνώριση της γενοκτονίας
των Ποντίων, ο Καναδάς δεν δικάζει άλλες χώρες ούτε επιθυμεί να
αλλάξει πράξεις του παρελθόντος.
«Έχει να κάνει με την αναγνώριση, την επούλωση των παλαιών πληγών
και την εκπαίδευση με απώτερο σκοπό την αποφυγή τέτοιων
φρικαλεοτήτων στο μέλλον,» είπε ο Γερουσιαστής Χουσάκος όταν
παρουσίασε τη πρόταση στη Καναδική Γερουσία.
Το συναίσθημα συμμερίστηκε και η Γερουσιαστής Pana Merchant, η οποία
εισήγαγε την πρόταση για πρώτη φορά πριν από την συνταξιοδότησή της από
την Καναδική Γερουσία τον περασμένο χρόνο.
«Το να αναγνωρίζουμε σφάλματα είναι ένα πολύ σημαντικό βήμα στο να
αποτρέπουμε μελλοντικές αδικίες. Η τραγική αυτή πράξη δεν πρέπει ποτέ να
ξεχαστεί» δήλωσε η Γερουσιαστής Merchant.
Ενώ η Αρμενική γενοκτονία είναι αναγνωρισμένη και ευρέως
γνωστή, η Ποντιακή γενοκτονία, η οποία συνέβη παράλληλα με την
Αρμενική, παραμένει στο σκοτάδι.
Ωστόσο, με την γενοκτονία των Ποντίων να έχει αρχίσει να
αναγνωρίζεται σε πολλά κυβερνητικά επίπεδα σε όλο το Καναδά οι
Γερουσιαστές Merchant και Χουσάκος ένοιωσαν ότι ήρθε η ώρα το
Καναδικό Κοινοβούλιο να κάνει το ίδιο.
«Ο Πρωθυπουργός Justin Trudeau έχει βάλει στόχο ζωής να αναγνωρίζει και
να απολογείται για διάφορες θηριωδίες του παρελθόντος. Οι συγνώμες του,
είναι προφανές, έχουν τα όριά τους», σχολίασε ο Γερουσιαστής Χουσάκος.
«Γνωρίζουμε καλά τώρα που βρίσκεται αυτό το όριο»,
κατέληξε ο Λεωνίδας Χουσάκος.

Resuming debate on the motion of the Honourable Senator Merchant,
seconded by the Honourable Senator Housakos:
That the Senate call upon the government of Canada:
(_a_) to recognize the genocide of the Pontic Greeks of 1916 to 1923 and
to condemn any attempt to deny or distort a historical truth as being
anything less than genocide, a crime against humanity; and
(_b_) to designate May 19th of every year hereafter throughout Canada as
a day of remembrance of the over 353,000 Pontic Greeks who were killed
or expelled from their homes.

my reason for abstaining.

**Senator Sinclair:** I would like to point out that I found the
motion itself to be acceptable insofar as it related to Pontic Greeks,
but it was not inclusive of all the Greeks who were subject to the
genocide at that time. I thought it was too narrow. I abstained
because it was not properly inclusive.
