The icon repositioning occurs after switching resolutions and is a PITA. Your (MacWeek 10/17/94) suggestion to open a folder before restart works only 1 time out of 10, and it has to be a window sorted by icons or small icons. At least for me, this is not useful. For this to work, you have to have QuicKeys and Frontier (-Runtime?). How it works: On every volume which is regularly mounted on my desktop, I have created special folders, to which all Desktop Items are moved prior to restart or shutdown. Thus, I have a clean desktop whenever the Mac starts and switches resolutions. As soon as Frontier is launched at the next startup, all desktop icons are moved again to their previous positions. The sequence: When I want to Restart/Shutdown, I send a script to Frontier with QuicKeys. WIth Command-R, I am sending myPutAway("Restart") and on Cmd-Q its myPutAway("ShutDown"). Whenever Frontier is launched the next time, the startupscript calls the routine myGetDesktop(). I have appended the routines in text form and as a binhexed/compacted Frontier database. Good luck, Gary This is Public Domain, please distribute this freely. I'd be happy if anyone who uses this can drop me a line.
