Sri Lanka Prison Protest Over COVID-19 Becomes Deadly

   Officials say aninmate protestSundayabout the growing number
   ofCOVID-19infections at a prison in Sri Lankaturned into ariot.

   Authorities say guards opened fire on the inmates. At least six people
   were killed in the clash and 50 people were wounded attheMahara prison,
   about 15 kilometers north of Colombo.

   Police spokesman Ajith Rohana told the Associated Press the prisoners
   "reportedly destroyed most of the property including offices inside the
   prison."

   Inmates at prisons in Sri Lankahave been demanding early releasein
   recent weeksbecause of the escalating infections.
