NASA Names Next Generation Space Telescope for 'Mother' of Hubble

   NASAannounced Wednesday it will name its next-generation space
   telescope in honor of Nancy Grace Roman,thespaceagency's first chief
   astronomer.

   In a releaseposted on its website, thespace agency callsRoman the
   "mother" of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, whichwas launched30 years
   ago,this year. NASA saysRomantirelessly advocated for new tools that
   would allow scientists to study the broader universe from space.

   Roman,who heldadoctorate in astronomy from the University of Chicago,
   came to the space agency in 1959, six months after it was formed. She
   served asthechiefofastronomyand relativity in the Office of Space
   Science.According to NASA, Roman spent much of her career working to
   establish new ways to probe the universe.
