US Urges Release of Canadians Detained in China

   U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is urging the immediate release of
   two Canadians detained by China on allegations of espionage.

   In a statement released Monday, Pompeo said the United States was
   "extremely concerned" about their safety.

   "These charges are politically motivated and completely groundless,"
   said Pompeo.

   Former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor were
   arrested in late 2018. China announced the espionage charges against
   them on Friday.
