Amnesty: Asia Seeing Growing Repression, Youth-led Resistance

   Amnesty International says governments across Asia are attempting to
   "uproot" fundamental freedoms, sparking a wave of youth-led protests
   against "escalating repression."

   In its annual report on the[1] Asia-Pacific region, released on January
   30, the London-based human rights watchdog noted that governments in
   China, India, Pakistan, and other countries across South and Southeast
   Asia are increasingly active in silencing dissent and the media,
   reducing the space for peaceful protests, and introducing legislation
   that punish online critics.

   "2019 was a year of repression in Asia, but also of resistance,"
   Nicholas Bequelin, Amnesty International's regional director for East
   and Southeast Asia and the Pacific, said in a statement.
