Humanitarian Workers Face Unprecedented Violence, UN Says

   GENEVA - The United Nations reports humanitarian workers are facing
   unprecedented levels of violence while putting their own lives at risk
   in order to provide life-saving aid to millions of civilians caught in
   situations of crisis. This year's World Humanitarian Day honors and
   pays tribute to these thousands of unsung, real life heroes.

   World Humanitarian Day was created in the aftermath of the terrorist
   attack on the U.N. compound in Baghdad on August 19, 2003. Twenty-two
   people were killed, including the Secretary-General's Special
   Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieiro de Mello.
