500,000 Californians May Face Power Cuts as Fire Threat Looms

   Some 500,000 residents of northern California could once again be
   plunged into darkness as the state's largest power company mulls power
   cuts in an attempt to prevent wildfires.

   The warning from Pacific Gas & Electric comes just two weeks after the
   utility cut power to 2 million people, many for several days.

   This time, 15 counties in the Sierra foothills and the San Francisco
   Bay area could be affected starting Wednesday.

   The dry and windy conditions are prompting PG&E to take action so that
   its power lines or other equipment don't malfunction and start a fire.
