This year was the deadliest climbing season since 2015, and images of a traffic jam of climbers trying to reach Everest's summit renewed questions about how to manage dangerous overcrowding on the peak. Some have called for a limit on the number of climbing permits issued or tougher standards for climbers and guides. Here are some numbers on Mount Everest: 8,850 meters--Height of Mount Everest 511--Climbers permitted to scale to the summit in 2019. (381 permits were issued for climbers on the Nepalese side, while at least 130 were issued for climbers in Tibet). Over 800--Climbers who made it to the top in 2019. (Each foreign climberis required by Nepal's government to have a Sherpa guide with them when they climb the peak.) Around 200-- Mountaineers who attempted the final ascent to the summit in a single day in 2019. (On May 22, the final ascent was crowded with climbers when it reopened after bad weather, creating a traffic jam of people near the top). About 5,000--Total climbers who have actually scaled Everest. (Improvements in mountaineering technology and weather forecasting since 1953 have made the climb easier). Less than a month--Window of time to ascend Everest each year. (The window usually beings after May 15, when winds die down and temperatures are warmer). A few days--Length of time the summit was open this year (Strong winds reduced the number of days climbers could safely summit, leading to a traffic jam of climbers on the final ascent). Less than a day--Time climbers have for the final ascent. (To reach the summit, climbers must brave the "Death Zone," an area above 8,000 meters, where climbers' lungs and brains become starved of oxygen, and the risk of death greatly increases.) 5--Average deaths each year. 11--People who died climbing Everest in 2019. (Nine died on the Nepalese side; two on the Tibetan side.) 4--Deaths in 2019 blamed on a traffic jam in the "Death Zone."(At over 8,000 meters, and with a lack of oxygen at that altitude, the Death Zone is the most dangerous part of the climb). 2 months--Average length of time to climb Everest. (Climbers typically spend several days to several weeks at each base camp to adjust to the higher altitude). 2--Main routes to reach the summit (The southern route is in Nepal, while the northern route runs through Tibet.) $30,000-$100,000--Cost to climb Everest. (Includes an $11,000 climbing permit from the governments of Nepal or Tibet. Other expenses include food, support from Sherpa guides, medical care and high-altitude gear.) 0--Proof needed of climbing experience to get a permit. (In light of the record number of deaths this year, Nepal is reconsidering its policy. Health checks are also not required, although some trekking companies require such checks, as well as previous climbing experience). $300 million--Amount Nepal earns each year from Everest climbing. 11--Metric tons of garbage removed by crews from Everest.
