Algerian Plane Crash Kills 257

   An Algerian military transport plane carrying soldiers crashed
   Wednesday, killing at least 257 people.

   Officials said the plane went down near the Boufarik airbase shortly
   after taking off.

   The Algerian Defense Ministry said the plane was scheduled to fly to
   Tindouf in southwestern Algeria.

   The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
