'The Silence Breakers' are Time Magazine's 2017 Person of the Year by VOA News Time Magazine has named a broad range of people, primarily women, who raised awareness about sexual harassment and assault in the U.S. as its [1]2017 Person of the Year. "The Silence Breakers" are responsible for "a hashtag, a movement, a reckoning," wrote Time Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal. "But it began, as great social change nearly always does, with individual acts of courage." Among those designated as "The Silence Breakers" are this year's public accusers of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and others who publicized their stories of abuse using the hashtag #MeToo in English and other languages. President Donald Trump was the runner-up for Time Person of the Year designation while Chinese President Xi Jinping was third on the list. Others on the list included North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, special federal prosecutor Robert Mueller and Colin Kaepernick, the ex-NFL quarterback who triggered a nationwide protest against racism and police brutality.
