French Police: 1 Officer Killed, 1 Injured in Paris Shooting by VOA News PARIS -- One policeman was killed and two others were wounded Thursday night in Paris, where gunmen opened fire on the Champs-Elysees in what appeared to be a terror attack. Few details were available in the first minutes after the attack. French police said one of the attackers was killed, but there was no information on the fate of a possible second gunman. One witness told police a man got out of a car that pulled up near a subway station, and he began firing a machine gun. Police warned residents and tourists to stay away from Champs-Elysees area, one of France's top tourist attractions for shoppers and diners. French counterterrorism officials have begun an investigation, but some police said they believe the attack may have been an armed robbery attempt gone wrong. In Washington, President Donald Trump sent condolences to the French people. He called the attack "a terrible thing," and said it was another example of the sort of violence that "never ends." France is on edge ahead of of Sunday's presidential election, with a very close outcome expected. The country also is still feeling the effects of a series of deadly Islamic terrorist attacks over the past two years that killed more than 200 people.
