Rousseff Impeachment Thrown Into Confusion by VOA News Brazil's acting House speaker has reversed his decision to annul the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. A reason for the quick reversal was not given. But now that Speaker Waldir Maranhao has formally reversed the decision he made Monday, proceedings against Rousseff can continue. If the Senate puts Rousseff on trial, her presidency would be suspended and Vice President Michel Temer, a former ally turned political enemy, would take over. Rousseff is accused of manipulating state funds to hide the state of the country's finances during her 2014 reelection campaign. She says her opponents, including Temer who is under investigation for corruption, are attempting a coup. The Rousseff impeachment proceedings were thrown into confusion Monday when Maranhao said last month's vote to send the matter to the Senate was invalid. He said Rousseff never had an opportunity to defend herself, making the impeachment vote illegitimate. But Senate leader Renan Calheiros then said the vote would go ahead Wednesday as scheduled. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/rousseff-impeachment-thrown-into-conf usion/3323113.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/rousseff-impeachment-thrown-into-confusion/3323113.html
