Obama to Make First Presidential Visit to Hiroshima by VOA News President Barack Obama will travel to Hiroshima, Japan, later this month, the White House announced Tuesday, in the first such visit by a sitting U.S. president. Hiroshima was devastated when the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on it, leading to the end of World War II. The bombing of Hiroshima resulted in the deaths of about 140,000 people. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second bomb on the Japanese port city of Nagasaki, killing about 70,000 people. A White House statement said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will accompany Obama during the visit to highlight the U.S. president's "continued commitment to pursuing the peace and security or a world without nuclear weapons.
