Brazil Crisis Deepens as Rousseff Impeachment Vote Annulled by Ken Bredemeier Brazil's political crisis deepened Monday, with the speaker of the lower house of Congress invalidating a vote last month to launch the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff. Interim Speaker Waldir Maranhao said a new vote should be taken on whether to impeach the 68-year-old Brazilian leader. It is not clear why he annulled the earlier overwhelming vote against Rousseff. Maranhao's action came as the Brazilian Senate prepared to vote this week on whether to suspend Rousseff from office while an impeachment trial is held. Rousseff's critics have accused her of deceiving voters by manipulating state funds to hide the state of the country's finances during her successful 2014 re-election campaign. She has accused her opponents of attempting to carry out a coup. The effect of Maranhao's order was uncertain. "I do not know the consequences. Please be cautious," Rousseff said, urging her supporters to "defend democracy." The political turmoil is occurring less than three months before Brazil opens the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and at the same time the country is battling the effects of the Zika mosquito virus. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/brazil-rousseff-impeachment-vote-annu lled/3321989.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/brazil-rousseff-impeachment-vote-annulled/3321989.html
