Rescuers Find Another Survivor in Nairobi Building Collapse by VOA News Rescue workers in Nairobi, Kenya have found another survivor in the ruins of an apartment building that collapsed nearly a week ago, killing at least 26 people. Pius Masai, who is in charge of the rescue operation, told reporters Thursday that a woman they found is still trapped, but is able to speak with medics who are standing by to treat her after she is freed. "She cannot move," Masai told Reuters, "but she is safe." On Tuesday, rescuers extricated a baby from the rubble of the building, which collapsed after days of rain in the Kenyan capital. The Kenyan Red Cross located the baby's father, who identified the child as 6-month-old Dealeryn Saisi Wasike. She was hospitalized, but reporters were told she was only dehydrated, with no major injuries. About 135 people have been rescued. Dozens are still missing, and officials have warned repeatedly they do not expect to find any more survivors. On Monday, authorities arrested Samuel Kamau, the owner of the six-story residential building. He was expected to appear in court this week. The apartment building, located in a low-income, highly populated neighborhood, had been condemned by authorities. There has been no official explanation from government officials as to why the evacuation order went ignored. The building was close to a river. Homes nearby have also been declared unsafe, as rains have caused a series of floods and landslides. President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered an audit of every building in the country last year after eight structures collapsed, killing at least 15 people. A report from the Architectural Association of Kenya estimates that half of the structures in Nairobi are not up to code. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/rescuers-find-another-survivor-in-nai robi-building-collapse/3316474.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/rescuers-find-another-survivor-in-nairobi-building-collapse/3316474.html
