March 15 Primary Results: Clinton Takes Florida, N. Carolina; Trump Takes Florida by VOA News Voters in five large U.S. states cast ballots in Republican and Democratic party primary elections Tuesday, on what is potentially a decisive day in the U.S. primary season. U.S. networks are predicting that Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton have won their respective primaries in Florida -- one of the two largest states up for grabs Tuesday. Reports show Clinton also has won North Carolina. The other large state, Ohio, was too close to call. Both Florida and Ohio are important for the hopes of both of the party front-runners, Trump and Clinton. Should they win both states, and the trove of delegates each provides to the party conventions, they would be well on their way to winning their parties' nominations. The outcome in those two states is especially important for Republicans because, for the first time in the months-long 2016 presidential campaign, the winner will take all the state's delegates to the party's nominating convention in July. In the three other states -- Illinois, Missouri and North Carolina -- Republican delegates will continue to be apportioned according to vote counts. Democrats win delegates proportionally throughout the primary season. The billionaire real estate mogul, Trump, faced a tough challenge from Ohio Governor John Kasich in his home state. But he was projected to easily beat Florida Senator Marco Rubio in Rubio's home state. Should Kasich and Rubio lose, there is the possibility they would quit the race and leave one Republican challenger to face Trump, Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Former Secretary of State Clinton's lone competitor hopes to repeat last week's surprising results, when Senator Bernie Sanders scored a surprising victory in Michigan, a Northern state somewhat similar in voter makeup to neighboring Ohio. Early in the day, Trump won all nine delegates in the Republican caucus on the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. property in the Pacific.
