Polls: Most in US Support Gun Background Checks, Assault Weapons Ban by Wayne Lee One day after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, Americans are debating tighter gun control laws. Public opinion polls conducted by [1]Quinnipiac University, show from February 2013 through November 2015 support for background checks for anyone who wants to buy a gun has remained consistently high. The latest poll shows 93 percent of Americans support required checks. The polls also indicate 58 percent support for banning the sale of assault style weapons. The polls were first conducted after a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, killing 20 students and six adults.
