                    6.7 Earthquake Shakes Northwestern India

   A strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook remote northeastern India
   before dawn Monday, near country's the borders with Bangladesh and
   Myanmar.

   Early reports say some buildings were damaged, but there was no word on
   casualties.

   Residents in the city of Guwahati in Assam state fled into the streets
   when their houses started shaking and books fell from shelves.

   The quake was centered about 30 kilometers northwest of the city of
   Imphal. It was felt as far away as Kolkata in West Bengal state, 600
   kilometers to the southwest.
