UN Peacekeeping Base Attacked in Northern Mali by VOA News Suspected Islamic militants attacked a U.N. peacekeepers' base in the northern Mali town of Kidal Friday, killing at least two people and wounding several others. Reports from the area said there was gunfire and mortar fire against the U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as MINUSMA, in Kidal on Friday. A source from the peacekeeping mission told the French news agency, AFP, that two peacekeepers had been killed in the attack. A Guinean member of the U.N. force told the news agency that the dead peacekeepers were from Guinea. The attack came just a week after U.N. peacekeepers and Malian forces retook a police base in Timbuktu that was briefly seized by unknown assailants. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Northern Mali has been wracked with violence in recent years, including insurgencies by Islamist militant groups and ethnic Tuareg militias. The U.N. established its peacekeeping force in Mali in 2013. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/un-peacekeeping-base-attacked-in-nort hern-mali/3188045.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/un-peacekeeping-base-attacked-in-northern-mali/3188045.html
