Global Markets Enduring Another Bad Day by VOA News Global markets are once again on a downward path Thursday, with investors fleeing to safer investments as oil prices fall below $30 a barrel. The benchmark indexes in Frankfurt, London and Paris were all trading between two and three percent lower by mid-afternoon, extending a rout that first began in Asia. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index lost 742 points, or nearly four percent, to close at 18,545.80, while South Korea's Kospi index lost nearly three percent to close at 1,861.54. It was the first day of trading for both indexes after a three-day break for the Chinese New Year. Shanghai and Taipei remained closed for the Chinese New Year, while Japan's benchmark Nikkei was closed for a separate public holiday. Thursday's selloffs in Asia and Europe are likely to extend to Wall Street, with the S&P 500 futures sinking nearly two points ahead of the opening bell in New York.
