Thailand Names New King by VOA News Thailand has formally proclaimed Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn as king. Vajiralongkorn takes for his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died in October. The formal transfer of power takes place Thursday after ceremonial protocols are fulfilled and top Thai officials formally invite Vajiralongkorn to become king. Once Vajiralongkorn accepts the invitation to become king, he will be named Rama X of the Thai Chakri dynasty, which has ruled in Thailand since 1782. Thailand has been in a state of mourning since the popular Bhumibol died on October 13. Bhumibol led the country for 70 years and was seen by many as a steadying figure during several times of political upheaval. Vajiralongkorn is not as popular and shies away from the spotlight enjoyed by the former king. He was named Bhumibol's successor in 1972 and is his only son. The king holds limited formal powers. The king's remains will be cremated during a ceremony that is not expected to take place until sometime next year. Only after that ceremony will Vajiralongkorn's coronation occur.
