African Court to Review Zuma Corruption Ruling by VOA News A judge in South Africa on Friday said a 2009 court decision to drop nearly 800 corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma was "irrational" and called for the case to be re-examined. "The decision... to discontinue the charges against Mr. Zuma is irrational and should be reviewed," Pretoria High Court judge Aubrey Ledwaba said. "Mr. Zuma should face the charges as applied." The court initially made the decision to drop the charges based on phone intercepts presented by Zuma's defense team. They said the charges in late 2007 may have been part of a political plot against Zuma, and the court's decision not to pursue the charges allowed Zuma to run for president. The court decision Friday is likely to increase calls for Zuma's resignation -- some even from within his ruling African National Congress party -- which started last month following a separate court ruling against the embattled leader. Home improvements On March 31, South Africa's top court ruled that Zuma violated the constitution after he used state funds to add a swimming pool and amphitheater to his private residence. The court ordered Zuma to repay part of the $20 million he spent on home improvements not related to security. '' Zuma apologized for the spending, but he did not, as some had called for, offer to resign over the incident. He said he acted "in good faith" and denied any deliberate wrong doing. Friday's court decision does not automatically reinstate the corruption charges against Zuma. Instead, the South African National Prosecuting Authority will study the ruling and decide whether to charge Zuma. Zuma did not immediately indicate if he will appeal the court's ruling. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/south-africa-court-to-review-zuma-cor ruption-ruling/3308153.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/south-africa-court-to-review-zuma-corruption-ruling/3308153.html
